Its an R reg 1997
There is no dipstick on the gearbox and nor is there a fan on the cooler.

The box has been changed for the later version or a later version sump has been fitted. !997 should have a dipstick. Cooler fan and no dipstick 1999 and on.

Easy enough job, as well as the fan you need the temperature sensor, wiring details are in RAVE or I can tell you what needs doing.
I may take you up on that offer Datatek, me and auto electrical works don't always see eye to eye shall we say. ;) That said I will have a look at Rave.

Where does the temperature sensor go/fit? I rightly or wrongly assumed that it would be in the cooler.

Sensor is on the side of the cooler.

The clutches are paper thin, so once they start slipping that's it..

There should be a magnet in the sump which pics up foreign matter, has the sump been dropped?

Usually it'll have a nice film of grey/black gunge if it has shagged itself..

4.2 litres should come out the sump with a standard service.

sounds like low fluid to meh..
