2.4 tdci engine temp gauge HELP

Hi all, my engine temp gauge needle sites below cold level when.Not running and flicks to cold level when started where it remains throughout the journey. Checked coolant level and plugs/wires coming from coolant reservoir. Any one come across this before or any advice?

Assuming that the engine has a thermostat fitted and actually gets hot, I would expect the problem to be the temperature sensor.

The temp sensor is at the back of the cylinder head, this is hard wired to the PCM from where it is broardcast on the CAN to the instrument pack. I have seen some faulty instrument packs. Best thing would be to Datalog the temp from the PCM and take it from there.
