Hi,
I've not long had a 1975 S3 diesel with what I think is a fairly original setup, it has never started well from cold for me, and have just now begun to investigate...
I found that one of the plugs was earthing to the engine, meaning not all of the plugs were getting current.
I've removed the faulty plug, and another for comparison - please see picture. Clearly some of the element is inside the cylinder / or welded itself to the head?
It was running well once started, and hot starting on the first turn, I've not turned the engine since removing the plug. I've tried to look inside the cylinder with a borrowed endoscope, but can't make out anything useful.
I guess the only way forward is to remove the head to investigate?? I'd be grateful of any experience or advice, what is the minimum to be removed before removing the head itself? can I leave the injectors in place for example?
