as title,

in the middle of everything on my series 2 i picked another engine up for a mate, (non runner) got it in the workshop bout 9 tonight, took timing case off and it dint look right to me ! yer just dunt kno whos been playin with them do yer ! :rolleyes:

looking front on, the key in the crank points up hill (90* to the block )
thats piston 1 top D C

the cam is punched with a timing mark, this is on the same point as the key on the chaft, it SHOULD be exactly oposite the key ! :doh:

so if i pull the cam gear off and turn the cam half a turn leaving the crank in the same position then fit the gear back on chain and tensioner back on ,

its ready to run ? or not? how i see it is the cam is half a turn backwards :rolleyes: so if i foreward it half a turn were somewhere near ! or does it need to go backwards ?


any ideas?

remove the roker cover and watch the valves on no 4 cylinder, when they are rocking, ie both just opaning as you turn the cranck back and forward, the no 1 piston should be at top dead center
 
i would be tempted to get a manual and read up on the timing marks because if you get it wrong it could cause damage to the valves and pistons and also to time it correctley the pistn as to be on the compresion stroke, and also if its got timing marks on the fly wheel these need to be on the correct timing marks aswell.

Psssst the crankshaft key is at TDC, dont matter about flywheel marks ;):rolleyes:
 
ah kno these 2.25 inside out , i just wondered why the fook some one would put the sprocket on the cam 180 degs out ? worra knob ! any ideas ( as its never run)
 
Seen that before when someone has diy'ed, with the crank rotating at twice the cam speed there are 2 points where the timing mark lines up on the crank, but only on one of them do both the marks on the cam and on the crank line up.
I think some jerks take the thing apart without positioning things first, then get all mixed up and reassemble all fooked up.
I did it when I was 17 and knacked mi honda, learnt the hard way.
Nongrokal has it right if the valves are rockin on no. 4 then no.1 should be tdc, I dont know if the valves will smack the pistons or not if the timing is wrong, take the plugs out and wind the engine over a couple of times by hand with a 'sponner' or starting handle before you try and start it up to make sure.
