In the middle of engine rebuild at the moment as you may know and am debating whether or not to go for a spicy cam or leave as standard.

Whats your opinion?
I am already going for a rebore, head skim, stainless exhaust manifold and possible new weber. The old weber on there is kaputt. But was woundering if its worth it.

I have heard from two good sources that it won't compromise torque.
 
I would think that the standard camshaft has such mild duration, lift and overlap that a hotter one would make a fair difference. The manifold, if it has fairly equal, lengths will add a fair chunk of torque. The standard one looks to be designed with no thought to efficiency or synchronising pulses.
If you have the head off the biggest improvement you could make would be to take it to a tuner for a very mild gas flow. It would pay real dividends.

I have often wondered what the 2.25 would produce with decent manifold, gas flow and cam. My guess would be it would transform it without losing low down torque.
 
A mate of mine had a series 3 comp motor with a tuned 2 1/4,gas flowed head,uprated cam,twin su's etc,etc and it went like **** off a shiny shovel! Wouldn't have liked to pay the fuel bills though.
 
Poo of a spade sound nice, I'll think I'll go for the sexy cam shaft then. I have found an Aladins cave of a place that's machining the block here in Bavaria. Its total chaos with a few machines in there surrounded by loads of engines. They chap really knows what he's on about and I'm confident he will do a good job. I think I might have a chat with him about opening up the head a bit then......
Never seen a good old cast iron block from Solihull next to an all aluminum V12 masarati block in a washer before. Made quite a nice site - hope he doesn't mix um up. Not sure the Landy's engine bay is long enough for a V12.

Can't be arsed with SUs though but will try and stick with the weber thats on my current engine.

If you want to get the cam to work properly you will need the heads modified, ie an upstaged head that has larger valves with featured port and polish. youll definately need extractors or better still (headers) and a double barrel or / twin carbs or a Holley or similar. If your going to cam the motor up your going to need to be able slam the fuel in and get rid of the gases even quicker! Best to calibrate on a dyno.

With a lumpy cam you need more fuel pumping in and the combusted gases need to escape a lot quicker.

If you don't do that, the cam will make your vehicle perform very sluggish. it'll sound good but with loss power and poor acceleration. timing needs to be advanced. Torque may or may not be compromised but i would think it would be.

Seriously , if you want to pep up your motor id stay with a set of extractors, larger diameter exhaust, mild head work eg, oversize valves and port job, and carb to suit. That will perform well throughout the rpm spectrum without being lumpy and temperamental and guzzling gas. Larger cams have a tendency to have a 'window' of performance, but outside that they can be quite ordinary and guzzle fuel for more noise than go.
