Well, starting issues are now a thing of the past. This weekend I fitted a new alternator, new starter motor (one of the smaller defender ones that earths through the flange), new earth cables, extra earth cables (chassis to slam panel to engine block). Went over all earthing points - took them to bits, soda blasted the nuts etc and emery board on the car earth - replaced. Vaseline on all the earth points, battery cables and contact points on the alternator and starter motor.
Lastly, fitted a ruddy great brand new Lucas 110v battery and upgraded the glow plug circuit by replacing what looked like 10 amp wire loom with 30 amp stuff. Soldered the relay points and again vaseline all over them as well.

The car now starts beautifully.

The only 2 pigs of a job -

Removing the old starter motor - and fitting the new one - inaccessible bolts
adjusting the new alternator and ensuring it fits properly. can you get an after market kit?

Also fitted a dixon Bale adjustable tow plate and a Nato hook

Sunday afternoon - collected the sankey trailer - pics to follow!

Next job - unseize the heater control valve

Investigate knocking when pulling away in first - suspect engine mount

Molybendum prep in the overdrive mechanism and steering box.

Sounds like a good weekends tinkering.
The heater valves are hardly worth messing with, only about £24
I have taken my heater valve off permanently and piped it up through a domestic plumbing valve. It now works a bit like the series 2 with heat turned on/off under bonnet.
In reality it stays on and heat is controlled by fan, total cost at the builders merchant for the parts was around £3

that's a brilliant idea - I've got some plumbing valves kicking about - a nice brass vintage one - it'll look like one of Fred Dibna's engines!

thanks

..drove 100 miles in S3 today. 75 towing the sanky with 3 big lads in the landrover. This afternoon I swapped it for my citroen CX - talk about opposites!
