Funny yesterday at my local dealer.

They had to fix wheel bearings front and find the prob why it takes 2litres of coolant on 1000 km.:eek:

Couldn`t find the leak and then told me that it is common on TD5 engines to loose a little water with that mileage.:confused::doh:

I`m not a mechanik but if that would be true then LR would have fitted a bigger expansion device.

Do Ihave a very rare prototype of a Diesel-water hybrid?

The Pressure is at 0.8 Bar inside the cooling circuit and that should be ok:confused:
Do you have any idea? They think that head and Gasket are good, I don`t know why1

Thanks a lot

Markus

I had a minor weep from a Core Plug just below the excaust manifold, cause a leak of around 1 pint per 1000 miles. Used some "radeld"-type stuff from Halfords and it's been fine since (for at least 50000 miles!).

If I ever take the manifold off, I may do a more professional repair, but for now it's fine.

Thanks a lot, two good ideas, I tell them when I bring the Disco to the garage next time.

I`m thinking about a S III 88 ore a 90 as a daily driver, they gave me a Honda Accord to drive, thats like a 18 year old school girl, good looking, a good ride but really useless.

i had a small water leak from the pipes to my thermostat, took me ages to find it...get it pressure tested, that should find any misgivings

I hope it's something simple, but this engine is known for cracked cylinder heads (usually at an exhaust port). Have a look for steam (white) coming out of the exhaust pipe when the engine is hot. If it is, then it's either head gasket or cracked head. It doesn't necessarily pressurise the system. Really hope it's something else though!

Thank you, I was looking for white smoke for the last 2000 km, went to Germany (no speed limit on motorways:D) and tried to go with full throttle for a while.
No smoke, nothing. A broken gasket or a cracked head was my first idea as well, but I´m still hoping to have an easy problem.
On the other hand is it a good thing to get these things fixed in the warrenty time;).

Do you know if new head are avalaible for the TD5?

I like that board, quick and easy replies

It should definitely not use ANY coolant. The only time I have EVER had to top mine up was when the head cracked, and I've done over 70 000 miles (more than 100 000km). If you have a warranty make them find the fault and fix it! Yes normal heads are available, and also a reinforced version (try a search on this forum). It is an expensive and complicated job on this engine - might well cost you as much as the value of the car.
In England it would be possible to take the car back to the garage and say fix it or give me my money back. Don't know if you can do that in Österreich, but your warranty should certainly cover it.
By the way I'm not sure it's a good idea to take it full throttle down the Autobahn. The car is 10 years old after all.
Where are you in Austria?

My 2001 td5 had a leak from the fuel cooler just a small drip but it did mount up to an empty expansion tank.I think it is a common problem,(some leak fuel but mine was coolant) changed the cooler for a secondhand one all is now well.Ratty knows all about this problem gave me some good advise as i remember.

Hi all,

Thought I had a leak on the coolant when I bought my 2000 TD5 last September. Every time I checked it it was below the MAX mark on the header tank by about 1 inch. Kept filling it up and every time it was below.

Then I read somewhere that some header tanks like to find their own level so I have left it and you know what. it gets down to an inch below the mark and it has stayed there for the next 3000 miles.

Also the leak I thought I had from somewhere up front has disappeared as well,it was obviously the excess coolant blowing off as it reached temperature.

So I'd suggest that if you leave it it might settle at a lower level. Obviously don't let the header tank run dry but its worth a try before you go worrying tooo much.

Regards

@Pastmaster

I`m from Tirol, and tried topspeed just for a few km and looked for any white smoke. Normally I`d never reach our speed limit of 130 km/h.

Warrenty is not the problem and the dealer has a very good reputation.
My prob is only that I want to keep the disco because they are a bit hard to find over here.
A lot are driving around but nobody sells them.

@All

thanks for your help, I collect possible leaks now and than visit my dealer again.

You would not normally see the white smoke (steam) at that speed. Better test: Go for a drive to get the engine hot; switch off for about 15 minutes; start engine and rev it up while stationary. That way any steam will not just disappear up the road behind you, but will form a cloud behind the vehicle. Let's hope it's something simpler though. The fuel cooler seems a good bet, and leaks from the radiator can be hard to spot - if yours has an original radiator it's about due for replacement.

I aim to be driving up through Tyrol on 1 March on my way to Munich. If you see a silver English Disco ('99. same as yours) give me a wave!

@Pastmaster

It`s easier when you call when you are near by, because sometimes during the week my comrades want me to stay in the barracks and 24 hours might be a bit boring to wait beside the motorway.

I send you a pm with the mobile number

Got your pm. Will try to call. Don't expect me to find the fault though - I'm an armchair mechanic nowadays!

Are you a soldier boy then???:D

Not a real fighter by now.

A paramedic and a driver of a medical APC, but I do my duty.

It`s not the prob to find a good mechanic, but as I told it is a good idea to know the common leaking points to shorten the research in the garage.
