I've finally run out of patience knocking seven bells out of the bendy little metal lugs with a hammer and punch, and resigned myself to buying / making a wrench that will do the job. The ones I've seen on t'interweb specifying they're for Defenders from 2002 onwards. .. for example https://www.lrbulkheads.co.uk/LAND-ROVER-Fuel-Tank-sender-unit-wrench-Spanner-NOT-DA1209 ... I now know are for something completely different. Are there any suggestions how to make this awkward job easier, or perhaps make a bespoke tool of some sort? Regards to all

They are a disposable item and only made of thin cheap steel so you should be able to chiesl it of and as long as you are hitting in the correct direction you will either split it and be able to pull it off or it will eventuall giv eup and start turning. there is not a special tool to my knowledge. The one you have linked if for the later intank fuel pump retianing ring.

Yes, find a socket that fits and (using a grinder) cut out notches ...
