I've just recently purchased a '98 Defender 110 with a 3.5L V8 that was special ordered from the factory by the original owner. The truck is well taken car of. The registered LR mechanic that has known the truck for most of it's life, says that it is one of the 3 best LR in Ecuador. I love it. It runs great. Though, I'd like to know what to expect with the 3.5 in the 110. Any ideas?

3.5 are fairly bullet proof ,service regular as engines get dirty inside a higher detergent oil wouldnt hurt ,(light commercial vehicle oil ) low compression dont feel as powerful as you may expect

Thanks James. That's helpful. I ran across some LR folks in Africa several years ago that there are some parts you know will either break or need to be replaced on a regular basis. For example, every 30k they changed a particular part because they learned from experience that part would break before they reached 40k. (Something like that) Anyways, do you have advice or suggestions of things like that to check out?

thought you just meant engine ,prop shaft ujs seems most common(rtc3458)service all oils gear box ,transfer box ,axles,10000,miles or less, wheel bearings (rtc3429g) grease regulary too you only need remove drive flange and outer bearing to regrease them and readjust (tab washer ftc3179),when suspension bushes are worn replace with a polybush kit from then on easy to change any bush if necessary

Great. Thanks. I'm open to any other advice or wisdom you have to offer. I love this truck and want to keep it running in tip-top shape for as long as possible. It will be my daily driver, mostly highway. I probably will not be able to afford to replace the truck itself, but I can afford to maintain it so that it has a long life.

The best defender and also least troublesome that I've had was my V8 110. I had it for 2 years, it was 10ultra reliable and handled roundabouts like it was on rails.

As Jamesmartin said it liked regular oil changes, It also liked regular fuel filters but this did improve after the new fuel tank went in.
