Hi all
this is my first discovery its a 300tdi es auto i was tinkering to day and i noticed that it had red seal around the cover that meets the engine ,the front being the time belt , my qustion is why would take this off and whats behinde it

When you say take the whole thing off? There is the timing cover which is bolted to the front cover which sits behind the timing belt. Only the timing cover has to come off to do the belt.

Yes the whole thing has to come off.

You need to take the serpentine belt off. Remove the viscous fan and viscous fan pulley wheel.

Undo the bolts that hole timing cover on (11 of i think)

Then you will see the timing belt and gubbins

hum ... it only means the timing belt cover was opened !

belt changed or not remains a question, as is the mileage at which that was done ...

@MrPDude: just before taking out those 11 or 14 bolts, there is that slight detail of the crank pulley to remove, and that alone can range from easy job to full nightmare

Oops! you're right of course! daft bastard i am.

To get crank pulley off, stick it in 5th, get someone in the cabin to get their feet hard on the brakes. get a huge breaker bar on the crank bolt and give it a going.

If that fails there is another method where you use the starter motor. Wont disclose it too much here. Look it up if you come to that bridge

shhh, I'll reveal my :hippie: secret method from the book of girlie tricks:

I make it a challenge between 2 or 3 tall and muscular friends, I have a nice show to enjoy  until nut and pulley pop out with no effort :p

OK, it costs me a pack of danese beer

do not try this is if you fear any breakages....

Disconnect fuel solenoid, breaker bar on bolt. Wedge breaker bar under left hand chassis rail. close bonnet, turn ignition very quickly. check bolt, repeat as necessary.

Disclaimer: This is the method as described in a different guide i have read. not one i recommend

starter motor v/s JM's motor gun ... I expect the gun to be more handy and comfortable, but the price tag is a freezer (but maybe it can be rented ? I never asked)
