Hi all in need of a pointer in the right direction. Wife was coming home from work this morning and she said the car just started vibrating badly and smoke coming out the exhaust. She pulled over and stopped it rang me and i went to the rescue. When i got there tried to start it, it started but sounded like its only running on 3 cylinders and was vibrating and clattering badly so shut it off, towed it home. Couldn't see anything under the bonnet nothing loose etc. I am thinking timing chain tensioner. Is there anything else I should be checking. T Y I A for any input
Steve

Cheers wammers. Will have to strip it down when I get home from work and find out if it is the chains. Hopefully it's only jumped one tooth.:(

Not to bad on the spanners. Rebuilt a v6 and gas conververted it before.. got the timing kit for the m51 and dial gauge + adapters for the tip. Is there anything else I'm likely to need special tool wise.

Above all else (from reading on here) you need to be 100% sure the crank tool is in the correct TDC hole, and not the wrong one, which is quite close by.

Just got rocker cover off. How much slack should there be in top chain if any. Cause I can lift mine up on the righthand side and almost put it over a linkto the left if that make sense.

Look at RAVE for details, but that does not sound right to me. It sounds like the tensioner has gone.

Ok update. Found that the lower chain guide has totally disintegrated. Nothing left, nada, zilch. It is all jammed up on the crank pulley. Can't even turn engine by hand. So out it comes in the morning and back on with the old one for now. Least I know the old runs fine. Just felt a bit gutless that why I changed to a 70k mile one. Hey ho you live and learn.(never trust what the seller tells you. Yes the chains have been done and the guides and tensioner). :(:(:(

Engine changed over this morning. Took the sump off the broken one and it's done more than just the tensioner judging by the size of the bits of metal in the sump. Didn't get chance to investigate further lost light. But will be having a look tomorrow.
