You can't just try advancing and retarding. It is not done like that. Timing is set with a DTI to thousands of an inch. You can't just turn pump back and forth and hope to get it correct. Revs will drop a little when you select gear. Thought you said the problem was engine stalling when you turn steering to right. I have already told you the possible cause of this.

You can though advance or retard (increase/decrease)the idle speed via the ecu.
Sounds more and more like an electrical problem as the ECU should recognise the increased load and compensate to maintain the idle speed at the set point, there is barely any noticable effect on idle on mine when engaging gear, loading the alternator or winding the steering round etc:)

Static timing is critical on an injection pump you cannot just turn the pump until you think it is running right like the distributor on a petrol engine. Could be a few things Data as you say. The engine speed is controlled by increasing decreasing fuel quantity.

Bearing in mind we are dealing with a lady who claims no knowledge, I thought it unlikely that the garage has tried to adjust the FIP mechanically, reading between the lines, adding 2 plus 2 and getting 5 as usual, I guessed from what was said that they had tried to adjust the idle speed electronically with no luck. :( Given the high mileage it could be the FIP itself, but it could also be the ECU, wiring or a sensor that is causing a failure to compensate for load at idle. Really need to look at live data:)

Yes it could be a few things. Could indeed be a problem with quantity control solenoid in pump. But as this only happens when steering is turned to right, it could also be the shuttle valve in the power steering sticking and causing the pump to momentarily lock up overloading engine and causing it to drop below 500 rpm, at which time it will stop running. I could of course be wrong it has been known before. But whatever the problem is, all we can do is put forward suggestions. But would think if changing the power steering fluid cures it, then it is a lot better option to start with than a new ECU or FIP overhaul.:):)

Sorry Wammers, you need new glasses, re-read the posts, it also stalls when selecting D or R:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yep your right, just read first post she says into drive or when turning right. So it's anything that loads the engine. Mine does exactly the same thing now and again. I do have an intermittant fault, fuel quantity problem on Faultmate. So maybe cleaning the connections to FIP would do something. Not gotten round to sorting mine yet. Weather is too **** at the moment. And to be honest it's not that often it happens.

Ok. Update. sent him indoors back to the garage with my car as i was losing my rag. had a close call as it cut out as i was turning into a side street. at the garage they disconnected the temp sensor and he took it for a test run. other than reving high it never cut out. they reconnected the sensor and so far it has only cut out once . now when i go from p to r or d it drops revs but has not cut out. must be that that is faulty. either that or was not connected properly when they fitted the new head!
