Hi all, I hope you can be of help to me?

I have, maybe rather stupidly, just bought a 1995 4.6 HSE that when i looked at it, was a bit lumpy on tickover, and when revving it. There was a rich smell from the exhaust, but this disappeared when the engine got warm (halfway on thermometer gauge). Heating inside the car was also nice and warm.

My main concern is the lumpy, rough running on tickover (not so much tickover, but when depressing/revving it up). I did not drive it (didn't have time) and was assured the dealer would have someone look over it before I pick it up next week, and if anything major is found wrong, would forget the deal, or knock off whatever it costs to fix. So this I was happy with. The car seems to shake slightly when revving and gives a burbling noise/vibration when revving.

Any ideas would be great. There are no engine warning lights come on on the dash.

*** Just been advised this may be normal as it is a V8? Excuse my ignorance if so, but I am new to such a beast of an engine ;)

Thanks,
Giles.

sounds like water settled in engine there goes when warmed up thus me thinking yuou maybe have start of the old liner or headgasket issues does or have she lost any water?

not sure about water loss as not got it yet......it seems fine on tick-over, but revving it just dont feel right.......but then i have never owned a v8 before. Should it rev like a normal car should? i.e. without 'burbling' and slight vibration? The white smoke and rich smell seems to be only apparant for the first 5 minutes when started, and disappears after 5 minutes, but still there feels like something odd when revving, even when warm. It ticks over at around 800 rpm, and when revving, there doesn't feel like any flat spots. He also told me that if it was mis-firing, a warning light would be on?

But, even though the white smoke and rich smell disappear when warm, he stopped it for about 5 minutes, then started it again and the smoke was back, but again, for only a few minutes. Temp gauge got to around halfway and stayed there.

Just to add, the dealer said he think there may be a slight misfire and is going to change the plugs.......what plugs would you recommend?

Also, is it worth me buying some leads and if so, which ones are a good replacement and from where? ebay are selling some for £25 but not sure if any good?

Also, one of the vacuum hoses to the top right (drivers side) from the top of the engine appeared to have collapsed. What may have caused this?

Thanks,
Giles.

Hi
Mine had a lumpy tickover and running when cold. Changed the plugs (BP6ES) but no improvement. Changed the (standard original) leads for 8mm Magnecor and problem instantly disappeared. Magnecor leads are expensive at around 90 quid a set but they're supposed to be the dogs bollocks as plug leads go. Cured my problem anyway. With hindsight of course I should have changed the plug leads long ago as they're now 10 years old and don't last forever. Hope this helps.
Regards
Derek

plugs now changed to NKG's, think slightly better but dont know. Got a set of leads coming, but am now fearing coil pack.......

If the dealer agreed to sort the vehicle you should not be parting with any cash.

What concerns me is it white smoke or moisture- white smoke is head gasket and or liners-take it back and get your money back.

If it's just moisture because it's cold, then it could well be MAF sensor on air intake-does it run better with it disconnected? (just to test, several cars I've played with no MIL light to indicate issue but poor running because of MAF)

Lastly if you don't get this sorted free of charge, contact Consumer Direct /Citizens Advice as the car has a statutory 3 month warranty and you will have the right to reject the vehicle as not fit for purpose.

lastly depending where you live someone on here may be able to take a quick look

i say he is a 'dealer'.....he says he deals in cars (had a few outside his private dwelling). Not sure where i still stand if i do discover the head gasket/liners have gone? He did tell me on the phone last night that he and his mechanic had checked and that the head gasket had definately not gone. This was verbal and on the phone. Do I still have rights from this type of sale?

The white smoke seems only to be when cold, and another mechanic i spoke to said 'they all do it, it's condensation'.

here is a link to the add and you can see the exhaust fumes in one of the pics (hope I'm not violating the rules by this?) Auto Trader UK - LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER 4.6 HSE 4dr Auto Estate

Photo's are hard to tell, but it looks more like moisture than white smoke.

As I suggested before the MAF sensor is really easy to test.

I would try the MAF plug first.

Then before getting to carried away with any discussion with the "Trader"

Give Consumer Direct a call, they will ask you some questions and will explain the options you legally have, armed with this you can then decide how to proceed
Apart from the local rate number it's FREE.
