Hi guys and gals,

Not sure if there's a new members section where I introduce myself but I'll find it if there is one. I'm sure I'll be a regular on here after buying a 2nd hand Disco :)

I just bought a 1994 Disco 300tdi which runs like a dream - apart from an occasional stall which is driving me mad because it's not consistent and I'm sure you've got some ideas. I've had diesel cars for years and never experienced anything like it.

Scenario 1 - start the Disco from cold, let it idle (2-5 mins tested so far) and it's happy. Press the accelerator and drive down our track and then when I release the accelerator at the junction with the road or attempt to change gear, when I push the clutch in it either stalls or the engine hunts. Restart it and it's fine.

Scenario 2 - stop the Disco and turn off the engine after a normal or long drive and let it sit for 10 mins. Restart it and the same symptoms occur. It will happily idle for a few minutes without problem but after giving it a bit of gas to move off and drive away then the first time I press the clutch either to change gear or come to a junction it stalls or hunts.

I was thinking fuel related but the fact that I can accelerate in 1st gear for a good 30 seconds-1 minute and ONLY when I release the clutch and expect it to idle does it stall.
Once I restart the engine it never happens again.

Help!
Cheers, Dave

ps. have just ordered new srpings for the rear central locking because it's not unlocking properly so I'm looking forward to working the the sticky thread on spring replacement. Thanks to whoever left that post here!

Found the newbies section and done my intro.
I feel my Haynes manual is going to get a good thrashing. Sedimenter is a paraffin cleanout is it or a filter replacement? Will order a fuel filter and change that when it arrives.
Are there any online places that are recommended for buying spares for Discos?

sedimeter is simply take apart carefully and clean out with petrol, parrafin ect. i would also lift the boot mat and take the round black cover in the center of the boot floor up and remove the sender unit to cheack the tank is clear and the little filter on the end of the pick up pipe is not clogged. then move forwards to the fuel filters. if that dont cure it then its round two but try that first :)

Still haven't gotten around to pulling the fule lines apart but I have found a way to prevent it from stalling. Run it in 1st gear for 300 yards and then change into 2nd gear as I join the 'main road'. Luckily there is rarely any traffic on the country road at the end of our lane but providing I keep it moving it doesn't stall any more.

how heavy is your clutch pedal? as it sounds like your release bearing is seized and dragging on the clutch pressure plate and causing the revs to drop down below the stall setting
