1993 V8i, should I buy?

went and looked at this today, LAND ROVER DISCOVERY V8i (4x4) - Trading Post

all in all looked quite tidy, has had a lift put on it which made it a bit top heavy to drive but not too bad. has 310 000 km on the clock, which seems like a lot to me , is this a lot for a v8 engine and auto gearbox?

engine and gearbox oil both looked clean and up to the level. the water was a bit low when i first got there so he topped it up, and after a sort drive the temp gauge was bang on, but when we stopped i took the expansion tank cap off and the water was really hot in there, was actually steaming. in fact the whole tank was very hot to touch, not something I have come across with any of my previous landies, is this an issue?

no other issues really, engine started on the button (on gas) and ran smooth for such a high mileage.


im reckoning i can probably knock him down to at least $5500 or preferably $5000, which is a hell of a lot by english standards but over here cars seem to last longer and 2nd hand prices are much higher. it is being sold with a road worthy certificate (a lot of 2nd hand land rovers dont have this), which is basically like an mot except you only have to do it every time the vehicle transfers ownership. also being sold with a years registration which is $600 odd, and we complain about road tax in the UK!

anyway what do you guys think, should the high mileage and water issue put me off?

The V8 does warm up quicker than the diesels, it is all aluminium so not so much mass, and heat transfer is better than CI block etc.

It's 17 years old, and the equivalent of £3000 is just too much, even allowing for it being in a foreign country.

The mileage is high for what is being asked for the car, I'd look for something else personally.

my soft dash 3.9 had done 240000 miles and was in good shape. no problems at all with it, as long as the lump has been looked after, regulat oil changes etc, it should go on for 400000 miles with no real problems.

Yeh the price does seem a little steep considering the mileage, that is the main thing putting me off.

are landies generally more expensive over there? why you not down the pub on a saturday evening

yeh they are a fair bit, like say they tend to last a bit longer with less rust etc which keeps prices high. but theyre no more than toyotas etc. one of the pros of this one is that it has RWC and rego, which a lot dont. but having had a flick through trading post at some others i could get a newer lower mileage model for not a great deal more, like $7-$10k so I think $5k needs to be the absolute limit if i do go for it. It looks like its been looked after but also its from a crappy 2nd hand car dealers so hes always gona be out to get as much profit as possible. Id prefer a private sale but most of em seem to be from dealers around here.

Im still trying to recover from last night, think i must be getting old (21!) but never used to be still hungover for the entire day following a night out! had a bit of a heavy one though, first weekend in the city for 3 weeks, I actually live at work accommodation in a town called Erica about two hours east of the city, pop. about 100 so its nice to get back to civilisation and away from hillbilly country! Anyway im off to bed!

I sold my 1992 V8i, auto, petrol for £500, had 109K miles, everything worked on it, just needed the floor pan done and some other welding, so either i shot myself in the foot as it has 4 good tyres engine and gearbox was spot on buy selling it so cheap and not asking a bit more for it.

well thats the thing, there were more sold in the UK and due to this and rust etc they are now considerably cheaper than over here. mind you, just about everything is cheaper than over here! A loaf of bread is about $3, a pint, if your lucky enough to find one, is $8ish, a 'slab' (crate) of beer is $45< !!!!

The millage doesn't matter what so ever as long as the cars been well maintained and serviced when its due! Price is a wee bit high but its a good 4X4!

Oh and coolant tanks do get hot and steamy (pardon the pun!), it even says in all cars manuals "Do not open the coolant cap until the engine has cooled down".

So personally I would go for it!

Plus it has the 3 and a half litre V8 that my Range Rover has! Except struggling to get the MPG into double figures it is a FANTASTIC motor!

aside from the lack of lpg it looks a bit more sensible. might ring them tomorrow.

That looks a bit more like it, lower kms, newer vehicle, lower price...................................a lot more attractive in my book.

And it's dual fuel.............................
