I am about to take possession of a 1992 RAF Defender 90 and need to replace the wheels and tyres. Currently shod with 7.5 x 16 Michelin XZYs.

looking for an AT tyre as 80% of time is on good roads. Don't want to anything drastic and certainly don't want to make any modifications. looking to fit black modular steels but what should i put on them?

265/75x16 BFG AT's sit very nicely on steel modulars on standard springs, at worst you will have to adjust the lock-stops which is a simple operation that takes just minutes.

Fitted a set to my ex-MOD 90 back in 1999 and never looked back. They grip well in all weathers, give an excellent ride and last for ever (upwards of 80K miles a set).

Well, you did ask!!

What's wrong with the 750 Michelin XZY's?

Are you going to do off roading or just staying around the doors?

The type of tread patterns are designed for different uses, so to run bog-hoppers on tarmac is not really a good thing as they will not give the same grip as road tyres. Conversely, you would not want to go bog-hopping on road tyres!

If you have some storage, get yourself a full set of roadies and a full set of SAT's, then you will have the best of both worlds.

AS I said, it all depends on what you are intending to use your ex-crabmobile for.

I have a 94 RAF Defender 90. I have kept the original tyres as they are great on and off road. Sometimes change is not always needed!!

thanks for the responses, especially from the failed comedians. XZY's are fine it is just the current ones are not long for this world and XZL ( the replacment ) is rathe expensive. Most of my driving is likely to be on good roads. aim based in France as will be the landy and tyres are expensive here. just thought i would pick up a new set while in the UK.

For what it is worth as an ex-rock ape officer i spent some time driving on XZYs and my memory is they were noisy, maybe that was the series land rovers.

cheers

It's your memory thats faulty. They are really really really bloody noisy!!!!

I learnt to drive at St Athan in the old Series and can remember the 90's coming into service in the 80's when I was at Wittering. We were so excited about the new Gucci kit....... :)

Being ex Air Crew I bought mine out of nostalgia!! Now fitted with a slightly bent 200Tdi (repair work in progress)! In fact mine is ex Catterick so has had its fair share of Rockapes crawling over it. Obviously properly fumigated now...... :)

lol,
i was at RAF Catterick 58sqn mid to late 80's, i possibly drove that on the moors or around the peri track. lol, was it DPM colour (Olive Green & Black to you of non combat types), did it have any rabbit parts in the front area at all, bloody aircrew lol....
