1988 3.5 Auto Box Delay In Changing Up From Cold

I would be grateful for some advice. I have a 1988 3.5 auto RR and have just had the gearbox fluid and filter changed at a 48,000 service. However, since then, when driving from cold the gearbox does not change up through the gears (gear lever in Drive position) for the first couple of minutes even at 4,000 revs. It did before. Any suggestions?

I had the same with me v8 disco box after an oil/filter change... 3 weeks later the box was shafted. Hope it aint the case with urs :eek:
 
the fault is govenor in rear housing of auto box ,the oil is very detergent cleans and disturbs close fitting parts ,if box as previous is shafted later its not because of oil but other parts failing oil change would only show what was going to happen any how,if box is generally in good nick and didnt have dirty oil in it previous to oil change (which would indicate box or parts failing)they will sometimes fix themselves after a week or so ,someneed govenor cleaning ,some need it replacing,which can be done without removing auto box
 
James - The old oil was clean. Is it possible/likely to cause more damage if I leave it a week or so to see if it clears itself? Is this something which could have been caused during the oil/filter change? It is the original gearbox which has covered 170,000 miles and the car has been serviced annually.

well here we are james, another poor bloke in gearbox hell with your damn oil changes :p

doug , I hope it clears itself, I had the same thing with mine, like nate the only cure was new box in the end after wasting £300 having a new govenor fitted it was ok untill a 60mph run a while later and that stirred up all the crap and blocked the govenor again. so £1500 for a new box fitted is about the going rate.

I am going to get shot of the car which has that new box in btw, you can havethe whole thing for far less than the cost of a box recon if you want and fit the box to yours if it doesnt clear itself.

its only about 18 months old with all paperwork, plus you get a free car for bits lol

I was a range rover virgin then mate, only had it 2 weeks and it was my first 4 wheel drive.

I wont be going down that path again!!!

your welcome to come and fix some of my stuff in the time mechanics actually take to do it rather than what they charge for or jobs they hang out :p

lets hope it clears up for doug and he isnt another oil change victim!

The gearbox has been filled with TQF, which was also used at the last 48k service. Do you think it would be worth draining the box and then, possibly, flushing with something like Fortes auto box product and refilling with Dexron D111? Or am I just clutching at straws?

it wont damage box unless you keep reving the balls off it ,govenor is a centrifugal device which is either worn or stuck by contamination heat from the oil usually frees it,it is obvious when looking in box if theres debris then only an idiot would fit a new govenor as clearly something else is breaking up,if box is clean and chances are cleaning govenor or replacing it will cure fault,ive done it

by all means try changing the oil, you cant rally flush it as its so out of the way. I would not invest more than an oil change it it in the hope that it might work unless your doing it yourself as the labour and parts are fairly pricey and you may as well put the money towards a new box!
 
Ive read that the gearbox can be flushed by disconnecting the cooler lines to the radiator and running the engine while topping up with fluid. Is it worth a try?
 
Thanks to everyone for all the information and advice.
I checked the fluid before taking it in for the service and it was clean with no apparent signs of contamination and the garage has confirmed that they did not notice anything untoward. So I will drive the car for a few weeks in the hope that the problem might resolve itself. If it does not, I might change the fluid again before replacing the governor.
I am loathe to go straight for a replacement box because I have owned the car for 20 years (from 35,000 miles) and it has only ever been driven on the road, never towed or abused and serviced annually.
 
Just an update.
shortly before the gearbox problem arose (immediately following the fluid change), I had been experiencing a juddering sensation when reversing once the car was hot. The garage suggested that this could be caused by the hand brake shoes binding so adjusted them. This did not help so they slackened off the brakes completely to ensure this was the problem before removing the drum. This did indeed stop the juddering and since this has been done I have not experienced any problems with the gearbox changing up. Could there be any relation between the two or is this just an amazing coincidence?
 
since adjusting shoes in hand brake stopped juddering ,nothing to do with auto, coincidence if car now changes up right ,up shifts need correct working govenor ,which after change can take a little time to settle ,
