I have a 1984 SWB petrol 2.25 pickup. Low mileage and it is great fun. Delighted with it. Does 50mph only.

All original parts. No service history. a bit daunted where to start. I have replaced oil and air filter. changed engine oil and radiator fluid. new bulbs.
Alternator voltage runs at about 13.6 across battery with all electrics on.

It needs two new outriggers welding in, front suspension cones are rusted. Undercarriage covered in mud. window has a chip. Stereo broken. Doors a bit tatty. foot steps very rusty.

Problems; in third gear gear stick vibrates ++. rear axle breather tube is degraded. Speed and fuel gauge are very flicky. No voltage meter or oil pressure gauge.

Keen to have any tips. in future I want to put a canvas on it so more than 3 people can be carried in it. Have another distant idea to put in a V8..
thanks

:welcome2:to the wonderful world of landrovers.Hope you enjoy the driving and the fixing up.Im no expert but I think if youve got 2 1/4l engine its aseries 3.You might get better advice on their forum.Love series myself tho currently run 90.;)

I'm told that those Petrol engines were quite good in a series, but no doubt (and perhaps clearly) not so much in a Land Rover 90 etc.

I would think hard though about an engine swap, its quite a project and you will completely change the character of the vehicle, something you might otherwise only realise afterwards and possibly regret depending how endearing the vehicle is!

Petrol was slower than the diesel??? My 2.25 derv totally standard no overdrive does 60mph
I made this comment cos I think a 90 is heavier than series and it takes more power to drive permanent 4wd.Agood 2268 diesel is a great engine in series but might be underpowered in90.Maybe early diesel 90s were 2 1/4 too?I never found the 2 1/4petrols very powerful thought it was due to a low state of tune but maybe the ones I drove were just knacked. No diss to slow uns either, one of my past loves was 2a with 4/203 Perkins.37mph til I fitted Ashcroft t/box and then45 mph.Sure was good in the woods tho:cool::D

Thanks for the comments. It is an early 90. For a short time they used the same 2.25 petrol engine as used in a series 3.
Q. How easy is it to make it legal to drive passengers in the pick up boot?

Tested the alternator and i replaced the battery and changed the engine oil. could not release the oil filter so i will look to buy the extraction tool. Next job is to drain/replace radiator and the gearbox/transfer box/front and rear axle oil. There is an oil leak at one axle too. Clutch is a bit tired. Windscreen washer does not work. windscreen is chipped. The axle breathers are missing. The fuel and speedo gauges flickr. i would like to add either a voltmeter or oil pressure gauge just for completeness. Seats are split and need replacing. Can i put brand new 2010 seats instead? Are they very expensive. Can i get a fuller seat belt for the middle seat? Radio/tape does not really work. Silencer needs replacing. most/all parts are quite cheap? new tyres would complete the job! Then i need a soft top. And a hard top to allow seats in the back.
Great car though. All lights work, exhaust burns clear. great fun

also i have the original keys. is it possible to get more replacement sets? i have the id tag with the number. There are three keys per set; ignition, doors and bonnet lock.

can you advise about cost of spares parts? Paddock spares seem very reasonable. If i get my SWB 90 serviced/repaired in a garage do i pay similarly low prices for spares?

And also there is a windscreen on ebay going for 40£ +15 delivery. How does this compare with say QUICKFIT/garage costs

thanks?

with a 1984 Landie, are there any smallish jobs that members have done to give big increases in comfort/mpg/handling etc. It all works fine yet i am tempted to put some new replacement bits in. Already changed battery and oil. Considering new alternator/new seats/new heater/clutch.

Also how easy is it to take the cab roof off? i cannot see it detailed in the manuals i have.

thanks

Can roof is easy. Be prepaped to grind off bolts. A few hours job first time half hour second. There's lots of things you can do, though mine had them
Done and I undid them in favour for originality. I love my series
And it's my only car! Daily driver!

Spares are generally cheap. Try Dingocroft. They're cheap, as are all parts autos.

Got yourself a decent motor there Ron v8 sounds like a good idea for performance. You can just about fit discovery seats in the front for comfort, and polybush and new springs and dampers for handling. Might need to look at the brakes too if you get tempted with the v8 :)
