Hi all,

First post here!

Have just purchased a new project to keep me occupied - A 1971 Range Rover with a Series 3/90 mash up on top with a big old V8 in the front!

Runs like a dream but need a bit of help identifying various bits and bobs if possible?

(Am not taking delivery of it until tomorrow afternoon so can't physically check until then)

I think it needs a new alternator, which is the first hurdle: It came out of the factory in 1971 with what I'm assuming would have been a 3.5? The chap who owned it before the chap I've bought it from had what I think was a 3.9 which was then bored, ported and polished to a 4.0 It was apparently going to be dropped into a GT40 kit car but instead put it in this - I can assure you that it goes like

off a shovel!

So, my question is this: What alternator should I be putting in it?! I rang a few companies who told me that the original spec one was a Lucas A127/65 24220 Type but I wasn't sure if they were for the 3.5 or 4.0? I've also been recommended a STC234 which seems to do the job also I believe.

The current alternator on it (which I think is dodgy) is a LRA100 if that means anything to anyone?

The next question is, do I need to get a 'left-handed' variant as it's mounted on the left hand side of the engine? (see photo below)

Secondly, I believe that the running gear underneath is all still 100% 1971 Range Rover (minus the engine), and it has a 4 speed gearbox - Would this be the quite rare LT95??

I've attached some more photos below just for enjoyment, but any help would be great.

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi and welcome . I can't answer your questions I'm afraid but just wanted to say that is one interesting beastie. What are you going to do with it, once running as desired?

No worries at all - Am not sure yet on its future use - first and foremost a vehicle for pub trips and back, but I’m going to strip it back to the chassis and clean it up a bit too.

Cheers for that, but I’m 99% certain it’s a 4 speed, not 5. Well, on the test drive there were definitely only 4 forward gears...

I’m taking delivery of it tomorrow - is there a way to check? I.e stamps etc?
this is an 4 speed lt95

Ok I’ll have a closer look tomorrow when it’s delivered. Are there model number stamps on it where I can check? It was deffo a 4 speed though...
it isnt 4 speed if it wont pull across and up it needs looking at to find out why, numbers are beside the drain bung on rhs

Depending on where in Rutland you are you could take the alternator off & take it to these in Leicester. Leave the pulley on & he'll put it on their test rig. I've used them quite a few times over the years for alternator repairs. Most recent visit being the starter motor on my RRC.
