HI all,
i've just signed up as a member to check a few ideas.
i have a fairly ok 109 from 1961, body, chassis and axles in good nick. Propshaft seals and bearings all about ready for replacement.
The landy has a lovely, but tired, 1970's toyota b type engine, 2nd generation. Pulls brilliantly, nicely matched for my needs (trailer work, a bit of mud / winch work, our 2nd car. No green laning / play). The engine drinks diesel, oil less so but more than it could. It now needs head off to sort out sheared exhaut manifold studs, plus injectors are fairly shot, various minor niggles. So it seems it may be time for a new engine, cost of bits adds up, though i do like the engine.
I am presuming a 200tdi, as I do most work myself. might go 300tdi if getting a worthwhile 200tdi proves too tricky. prefer not move front grille, happy to lose intercooler. bonnet accepts spare wheel, plenty of room?
any pointers on which engine? weak points beyond the obvious?
I don't need the landy to razz about and look good, it needs to be a low maintainance plodder that goes as easy on the fuel as it's able, and is still viable in 10, 20 years.
Fitting; I am looking for someone to do this work. Any suggestions? I'm in south norfolk.
Thanks all, Sam

I should add; my bias is for a 200tdi (series gearbox and i already have overdrive, simpler to work on, no fly by wire), and if this is the right one should I be getting a defender one, or would a disco do (different manifolds?). Appreciate need to rotate turbo, mod exhaust.

Discovery one will be far cheaper than a Defender one and it will fit, so depends on your budget I suppose.

Either way there is going to be fabrication.

2.8 Isuzu had.one in my old 110 ####ING flew, or 2.5 n.a known as the tractor engine, plenty of pull but not very speedy, I love both engines the TDI is a great engine but way too many have got these now. I know they're the best engines well one of but why not try something retrofi,

if Cambridge is close you could try this chap for the work, iirc he has at least one series landy, might even be able to rebuild or sort out your Toyota engine, I'm sure it shouldn't be that thirsty

I've been adding things up a bit more realistically, and it is looking like I'll be patchng the engine that's in there. Just can't go the extra money at the mo, it'll keep the old beaty running few more years anyway

If you want just a plodder and a very simple insulation you cant beat the 200 in DI form...that what I have...so glad I binned the turbo...still plenty of power from a simple unstressed engine giving 35+MPG,

And it has a green Landrover badge on the Rocker cover.
