Good evening,
When i change up ino 3rd gear it crunches. If i am at low speed and low revs and i gently ease the change is ok but with normal speed and the normal way of changing gear (if there is a normal way?) it crunches. Very occasional it happens in 4h too.
Can anyone help me please?

It'll be gearbox internals....synchro hub, or baulk ring?? Not exactly sure...but it sounds expensive. Dont quote me, but it probably wont destroy itself..and most likely will last longer than the HG!!

Took the car to Mr Clutch for a free clutch check. They have said they think its the clutch but dont want to rule out the gearbox. Great help there. They said a new clutch will be around £350.

Hmmm...dont think it will be the clutch, more likely to be gearbox internals. If the clutch works fine, ie no dragging when pedal fully depressed, then i'm 99% sure it will be gearbox related. Can you engage all gears OK when stationery?
There are many very knowledgable folk on here, I'm sure someone will correct me if im wrong, but I think its highly unlikely that the gearbox is in imminent danger of munching its internals, because of a lazy synchro hub.
My 1.8 FL1 has the same issue, but so vey tiny it is barely noticable. a quicker than usual change from 2nd to 3rd, and very occasionaly I can 'feel' it through the gearstick.
I THINK I have seen posts on here about clutch slave cylinders giving problems such as working themselves loose, or falling off? You might like to check that out.

Many thanks for your help Russ.

I can engage all gears with the car off.

I guess you mean with the engine not running?
What about when the engine IS running, and with clutch pedal fully depressed? Is it difficult to find a gear? Does it drag when you've got first gear? If so, then there is a clutch problem, or clutch hydraulics.
If the clutch works fine, then it will be gearbox related.
Cheers,
Russ

Just seen another current thread oh here called 'changing clutch on Freelander XD....' Check it out. Sounds very similar!!
Cheers,
Russ

I can engage all gears with engine off and running. I am going to book it in with Gumtree 4x4 and they are going to diagnose the problem. Hopefully it wont be to expensive
