Did as you suggested and both front wheels turn fine so I can discount VCU. Finished just now got dark very quickly and ****ed down as well.
So I am going to go with maybe bit faster than estimated and looking at the tyres even though they have plenty of tread they do look a bit old.
Thanks to everyone that replied. I learnt how to check my VCU.

Assuming your tyres aren't truly ancient, you should have a 4 digit date code on one side or the other, eg 1520 - week fifteen, 2020.. 2318 - week twenty three, 2018 etc

In that case you don't have a VCU the BW transfer case coincided with the introduction of the 3.9 and 2.5VM.

I am confused now, Land Rover states that all Range Rover Classics were fitted with a VCU in the transfer box from 1988.

It also may be worth undoing the lower mount on the shocks to check for even pressure on each one.
The small movement valve in shocks are in charge of the little changes in body shifts. If you pull and push the shock up and down it'll click inside if the valve has gone.

That is correct.
The '89 model year was introduced in the Autumn of '88 & would have a VCU.
nb. what do you mean when you say that having carried out the prescribed test BOTH front wheels turn fine?

As above^^^^, only one front wheel should be off the ground to test the VCU.

easy way to tell is you'll have the Single plane selector for transfer box or in other words no diff lock if you have the BW

I tested each wheel separately with only one wheel off the ground.

If they rotated easily, there is no VCU.

Viscous coupling.

As said earlier, 3.9 & BW with viscous coupling fitted from Oct 1989 on for 1990MY.

I'm also inclined to think you may well have found a diesel spill, not unusual on roundabouts, esp those near to filling stations.

Well, My son has borrowed my car tonight. He has just rang me and said when you take your foot off the gas the car feels like it is grabbing and wants to pull to the right. I will check the brakes when he brings it back.

You are spot on. He just rang me now and said that the rear offside wheel was smoking and red hot. He through a can of coke on it , lovely.
Seems that maybe this was the issue.
