V8 is cheaper to insure than TD5s but good luck try admiral and aviva thats where i got all my good quoted from! depends where abouts in country you are etc, try adding parents as named drivers massively brings the premiums down :)

yep that is true , didnt realise untill i had brought a td5 for a build, and all ready had a bloody 4.0 v8 :( ohh well hopefully i will save on fuel :)

Cheers for all that information guys, currently my insurance on a 1340cc mini is around £1000-£2000 if I were to insure that when I can drive so having a 2.5 td5 for around the same price sounds a lot more appealing to me. Sure the mini is faster and corners better but the fact of owning a land rover at the age of 17 sounds great. Plus land rovers are in my blood and I can't really appreciate a mini if I'm surrounded with land rovers. Fingers crossed it will all work out p. worst case scenario I will have to be add a named driver.
Thanks again, any more information will be appreciated.

I have Adrian flux a ring and got quoted £4083 for a 1999 td5 defender 90 station wagon.
I'm going to give them a ring again tomorrow to get a quote for a 300tdi defender and disco then a v8 disco and td5 disco. See how things go, I really want a landy now and so far Adrian flux is the most realistic quote I've had.

Disco v8 (300 series probably your best bet!) LPG though! try aviva and adrmiral they are only places that gave me reasonable quotes (im 19) was that with parents as named drivers?

Adrian Flux were the dearest quote I got for my range rover. £600 dearer than Aviva.

I pay £120 a month for a V8 P38 and i'm 21 with no ncb

Bencorkil: yeah that's what im starting to think, it could be a old v8i disco or a v8 range rover. I like the sound of either jus don't know what would look best :/ admiral quoted £51,000 for a td5 defender but it might be worth a go with a v8 just to see what the difference is. Going to try Adrian flux again for sure as they where cheapest.
Northsea92: I found that aviva where mid range with quotes, the quotes just over £17,000 for a td5 defender once again I will probably try again with them but with a v8 disco/range rover

are you insane?

Thats a hell of a lot of money to insure a vehicle.

Why dont you get a land rover, keep it off road and fix it up/get it how you want and in the mean time build up a couple of years no claims (or crash) some ****ebox hatchback?

Everybodies first car is a joke, mine was!!

Flat: I wouldn't buy a land rover if I was quoted that sort of money throughout but as I've been quoted £4083 there must be a few different ways of getting the price of the premium down, weather it be having to buy a 300tdi defender/disco or a v8idisco/range rover

Are you trying all three options when getting a quote? Putting other named drivers on the quote? Changing your profession(that one saved me 80 quid once)

Yeah it's all been juggled around and drivers added etc etc. Gave Adrian flux a ring and got through to Ed. Odds of that aye? Very helpful guy and has really boosted my understanding of insurance. Highly recommend Adrian flux, seem to be the cheapest quotes I can get.
Got a quote for a mini of £2669.97 and a td5 defender was £4083. I know what I'm going for...

Indeed, I need a station wagon 90 because of this god damned low emission zone as well, slightly more expensive all round :-(

Being 18 myself I can see where you were coming from.

In the end, I went for a 61 plate 2.0 diesel x trail simply because it was so much cheaper to insure! Approximately 5K and that's with 2 YRS NCB. I decided to wait and get a D4 in a few years.

Driving a vehicle all the time and only being a named driver is known as fronting and is illegal. I know of a few who have not had pay outs because of this.

Best of luck with it though!

Speak for yourself. Mine was a 90 :D

Anyone else thinking kids these days have (parents with) too much money

one kid looking at paying £4k insurance just so he can drive a TD5 (for some reason. a 300 is such a better engine) then another talking about buying a D4. :confused2:

(mind you, he also had to speciify it was a 61 plate... so a show boater too. Could have just said X trail.)

£800 worth of 1.2 renault clio for my first car, insurance was around £1500 mark. I am 23 now so that was 6 years ago. After 2 years I then started buying the faster, bigger cars and my insurance was never over £1000.

I personally try and spend as little as possible on insurance just because i dont want to give the robbing bastards a penny more than i have to. £1500 is a big difference between the disco and the mini, i would drive the mini for a couple of years then when insurance for a landrover becomes a bit more realistic get one and use the money you have saved on insurance to buy a really nice landrover. £1500 would give me a quality lads holiday along with plenty of great nights outs.

Ouch there Matt.

My son's also 18.

It is cheaper by £1k to insure him on my stn wagon tdi 90 than it is on the 1.25cc 04plate fiesta I got him.
That's on my ncd. :suspicious:

But even so that's £3k on top!!

On his own insurance, not a hope until he added his mum (not me!! :D) on the policies.

The risk is high on how many passengers you have. If you get a stn wagon for the lez zone - tell the insurance it hasnt got back seats - and remove them! I don't use my rear seats!

You can sort of understand why some youngsters dont even bother with insurance - sort of.

I wouldn't recommend taking up one of those 'driver monitoring' devices they offer 'young' drivers! In a defender it would die!!! ;)

im not sure just taking the seats out is enough to satisfy an insurance company, i think they go on classification of the vehilce - i.e what it says on your V5. If your going to take the seats out of a sw you might aswell get a hardtop
