16's Vs 18's

Hi I have 265/65 r18 alloys with all terrain tyres. If I change to 285/75r16 would I get a more comfortable drive

Car is sitting on terrafirma medium springs can get a bit hard on road hence why am thinking the 16's with more rubber would increase comfort ?

A taller tyre will give a more supple ride and absorb bumps better, but comfort is subjective

Personally doubt all that much difference on road tbh. The 18 still has a pretty big side wall. Would have thought it’d be a lot cheaper to change springs than tyres & rims. Shocks and bushes can also play a part in ride quality.

I've had the medium springs on for about 2 years now , when they start to fail maybe look for a more softer spring and keep the 18's

Springs rarely fail, on some brands they might rust through, but usually due to a place water can trap and cause this. I suspect springs on the Land Rover will be fine for another 40 years...

I still can't quite fathom the logic though. If you where prepared to go new wheels and tyres you must have been talking £1000 or maybe more. New springs would be way cheaper.

Although I'd guess shocks might be the biggest thing to consider. What do you have on there now? And what vehicle is it?

in my experience, springs do fail, they can sag over time, but more often the tail end snaps off, usually on the lower end of the spring

I have a Discovery 2 td5
2" terrafirma springs and dampers
265/65r18 pirelli scorpion a/t tyres

I like the setup just gets a bit bumpy so thought maybe a smaller wheel with more rubber would help (285/75r16)

16s much nicer ride than 18s, especially on todays roads!
Might lose some steering lock with the wider tyres.
Tyre pressure play a big part, you cannot go to far wrong with 30psi as a starting point.

Sounds like a good idea , would you go 16" alloy or modular

They said they have 265/65R18's, that is not a standard tyre. We aren't talking rubber band thin side walls here.

You have a 6.9" sidewall, plenty of flex.

I agree my tyres do have a fair bit off rubber side wall but still a little bumpy, just tryna maximise comfort thought the 16's would give it .

At the moment I fill the tyre to 38psi which could cause the more bumpy ride , maybe I'll deflate the tyre to 32 and see if that makes a difference

I have 18s and the ride also depends on tyre age and brand.

Was bad at first on certain roads, new tyres much better ride, ones on it were old.

38psi sounds too high especially for the front
