I have a 12J N/A in my 2a and the only problem I have with it is a reluctance to start in cold weather. I have fitted new glow plugs and the fuel filter is new. It tries to fire up but just wont do it with out boosting from another battery. Starts perfectly when warm (don't they all).

Is it possible to increase the fuel putput from the injector pump slightly to help cold starting?

I have the same with my Defender....first thing in the morning it will need a jump and after that its fine until left overnight I too changed the glowplugs, so I decided to take the battery off incase there was a power drain somewhere....(as the person before I bought it did some very dodgy wiring). I charge the battery overnight incase this may be the problem its a 640CCA.....I stole my sisters toyota battery (540CCA) for jumping purposes lol...and still it doesn't want to know. I have checked the wiring to the fuel stop solenoid and found it was loose and tightened it up....but at the same time I have noticed a leak at the top of the solenoid, I am wondering if this is causing the fuel to drop below recommended pressure and making the starting worse. I will be watching this as it really get on my nerves too......apart from that the old bus is a 1986 110 and I love it. I am a complete newbie on the diesel side so this doesn't help..Cheers for any other help out there Richard

Are you touching the accelerator while trying to start? This will cause issues, also, if you are not touching the pedal is the linkage at the pump pulling on the throttle lever at all i.e. too tight?

How long are you giving it glow for? When I ran this engine I found that after a cold night it needed about 20-30seconds on the glows then just cranked it till it caught - maybe 7-8seconds. Started fine after that.

Another option and it may be easier than jumpers and having to get other vehicles involved etc... is to get a rag, dip it in diesel, and catch it tightly with a piece of coat hanger, light it and hook it onto the intake manifold (leave the pipeclip loose enough you can pull the pipe on and off) lots of glow and start cranking, it will suck the flames into the cylinders and ignite the vapour, oh, I assume your getting clouds of white smoke out the back? Go out get the rag out, stick the pipe back on and away you go.

Thanks for the responses chaps.

1. My foot is clear of the accelerator when starting. 2. The linkage is fine. 3. I give the glow plugs between 20 and 30 secs. 4. I dip the clutch pedal to reduce gear oil drag on starter motor.

If the ambient temperature is above freezing she usually starts ok, but of course it's when it's below freezing I need it most. :(
