Introduction

The Squadron purchased the land rover in late June 2007 from L.Jacksons of Doncaster. The vehicle was loaded onto the trailer under its own steam despite not having being started in four years. Shortly after getting the vehicle back to 1151 Squadron, the Land Rover was inspected to REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) Periodic REME Examination (now known as a Mandatory Eequipment Inspection) standards which are considerably more in-depth than a Civilian MOT.

The hood-sticks and tilt were removed and the entire vehicle was steam cleaned prior to the strip-down. By the end of the first day the spare wheel, bonnet was removed and the team started on removing all the light fittings. Every nut ,bolt and screw were in poor condition with years of rust; the seemingly simple task of removing light fittings without damaging them turned into the second full days worth of work. Every part that was removed was closely inspected for serviceability with the cadets carefully noting any unserviceable (U/S) parts in a list for replacement.

It was decided after the inspection that all rubber boots, bushes seals and all tyres needed to be replaced due to the damage caused from the suns UV rays on the rubbers over such a long period under cover in the storage field at L.Jacksons.

The cadets could not get enough of the Land Rover project. The Squadron spent thousands on equipping the garage out with tools, repair manuals, parts manuals, H&S equipment and not to mention the endless hours of assesssing and writing risk assessments out. This was all prepatory work that had to be completed before a cadet could even pick up a spanner!

The Project Leader & Preparation

WO Duffy even had to write out a WRITTEN SCHEME OF EXAMINATION on the compressors that we had purchased. Fortunantely, WO Duffy had done all of this before on his H&S training courses during his 10 years of service in the REME. His time as a civilian mechanic came into its own with the required MOT standards. Despite WO Duffy’s time as an ‘A’Mech (Armoured Mechanic) during his service with the REME, Land Rovers were his bread and butter work, second nature and easy to work on.

Cadet Involvement

Each Sunday the cadets attended the Squadron to work on the project without fail. It was decided after the first few weeks that WO Duffy needed to prepare which work the cadets could realistically carry out so the routine was changed to include a band practice for the cadets for the first hour of each Sunday before they could start. This helped the Project Leader to prepare all of the tools, equipment and paper-work as necessary.

This careful planning has worked very effectively and it has enabled the project to run smoothly and without incident and allows the maximum amount of time for the cadets to get hands-on with the Land Rover restoration. The project proved so popular with the cadets, WO Duffy had to make a rota of who would work on the project and when. The project was run on a Sunday but soon had to extend the working days to include Tuesday and Thursday nights when the Sqn programme permitted.

Skills Training

The restoration project contributes directly towards the cadets Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme involvement, specifically to the skills section of the award. Silver and Gold Award cadets benefit particularly as the project allows the required number of hours for the skills section to be fulfilled easily.

Since June last year, WO Duffy has trained the cadets in proficient use of hand tools and air systems. This training will be enshrined in a certificate awarded at the Squadron presentation evening and it will state that they are competent to operate these tools with some skill and with safety in mind. Cadets training in their civilian lives (i.e. at school), no longer offers such hands on skills. The cadets have gone from a very ‘fingers and thumbs’ approach to mechanics to ‘hands on skills’ in a short period of time which is incredibly pleasing and rewarding to see. The ATC’s motto is ‘Venture Adventure’ and the cadets spirit in this project really lives up to that motto!

The End-State

At present the Land Rover is stripped down to its chassis. The rebuild will begin soon; the project team anticipates that around £1500 on parts and painting will be required to return the vehicle to its ‘as-issued’ condition. The Squadron will not be scrimping on parts – this is a full overhaul and restoration not a bodge and scarper job. WO Duffy’s attitude of doing things skillfully from the outset still holds true from his service in the REME whose motto is ‘Arte et Marte’ which, translated, means ‘By Skill and By Fighting’.

The cadets involved in the project are incredibly proud of their work and justifiably so!

Further updates from the cadets themselves will follow this initial article.
More photos to come as the work carries on.

Land Rover Owner International will be doing a major article on this project once we are further down the line. We intend to have a rolling chassis ready for Jul 08 with the project completed by the tale end of this year.

Should be a very nice landy when its finnished tho. good luck !

Oh ! If yer need any advice on the photo shoot feel free to ask !;)

Im famous yer now know!:p :D

Nice project for them to cut their teeth on.... Would be helpful if you could list the parts you need and then link your post to the wanted/sales area.

People are more willing to donate to a list rather than risk a good item that wont get used.

Had a trip over to the Sqn today to look over the parts that are tatty and in poor condition , so far it seems that we could do with the following:-

If you can help with any of these parts it will be a great help and allow us to spend more on the important bits as we are renewing all the brakes , suspension and steering and have to have the engine rebored and crankshaft reground.

So far it seems that we could do with the following:-

A/ corner dash cover for the wiper motor

B/ spare wheel strap

C/ seat belts

D/ seats

E/ rear bench seats and frames

F/ lights all round including head lights

G/ Mil tyres 7.50 x 16

H/ steering wheel

I/ rear tub tool bin lids

J/ radiator

K/ nato hitch

L/ Rear wing (would really mean another tub)

M/ hard top and back door (our rag top is rotten and holed)

N/ Plate from bulk head and cross member with 12v neg earth , gear change plate and one from fuel tap if its a metal type.

O/ fuel change over tap and fuel pipes

P/ front and rear axle breather pipes

Q/ clutch slave cylinder and pipe

R/ door top n/s

S/ both door bottoms

T/ sun visors

V/ rear view mirror and bracket

Well, if you dont ask you wont get.

Will have a dig about at home and work to see whats about.

Do you have access to a mil unit so I could internal mail some of the smaller bits if I can find them...

Lee

Yes if you dont ask you will not get , i may be able to use a TA centre or could use a mate in Catterick who is an MOD Guard now after his 22years.(Stag on!!!)

Its a long list but we want the finished Landy to look as it was from the factory , its strange working on 'B' vehicles again been out of the Army for 7 years now.The whole vehicle is going back to bare metal for this project and we want it to look tip top.

Anything you can come across will be great the smallest item is just as important as the larger items.I will get back to you with a unit address.

Thanks

Today we picked up the paint for the project and all the equipment we need to spray the Landy with , in total we spent £667.00 on all you can see in the photo below. Also the chassis has now been taken from the angle grinder rough finish to a definite wow type shine via the use of 36 grit sanding pads fitted to the grinder , a fantastic base for the primer and then the chassis black finish. All thats left to do is finishing off the hard to reach parts around the chassis by hand and weld on the new bulkhead out riggers , rear x-member and plating the dumb iron and plating on the rear of the chassis , when i say plating not just some thing slapped on top but welded in flush and grinding it down afterwards to give a seem less finish. We are going all out to get the finish as perfect as is possible , when the project is finished the Squadron is going to sell the 109 GS and use the money from the sale and invest it in the next project.

This weeks progress has been slow , due to a Fieldcraft exercise on MOD training area over the bank holiday weekend , so it has been a catch up on Thursday and Friday , yet more chassis work , cadets have been using the air drill and electric drills fitted with wire brushes to clean in some of the hard to get to places , to enable the chassis to get a coat of primer . The cadets are in this weekend for more hard work on the chassis , hopefully some welding will be completed and then its just the wait for the parts to arrive i.e. the rear ex-member and bulkhead out riggers.

A few weeks have passed since the last update and very little has happened on the project due to Squadron activities , ranges and me having to do a full weekend first aid course last week. But we have managed to get a hard top and sides and they have been washed down ready for sanding and painting. The cadets got stuck in to the project today and we achieved a bit of sanding on the final parts on the chassis yet to be completed. We set the cadets off on the task of sanding the seat box down .We are having problems getting a quote for the parts needed so far we have tried Beamends e-mailed them twice and called once that was weeks ago and still no quote , so we are now in the process of trying to glean a quote out of Paddocks and we have e-mailed them twice and called twice and have been waiting a week and a half for them to reply also.Im not to happy with situation as it is slowing down the project to a snails pace. Will keep you up dated on the progress with the parts situation.
