Good morning everyone I have practically now given up ever finding where the rain comes in on my 110 roof so on another note I could do with your help please, I seem to have a transmission whine been there a while I thought it was the roof box until I took it off. You mainly hear it when slowing down I think it’s either diffs or transfer box how can you tell which one, I used to enjoy rolling around under these trucks looking for stuff, trouble is I got so old I can’t get up again!!!!!
Any ideas would be helpful before I get it in to someone to fix.

1. check oil levels are correct in gearbox, txfrbox, front diff, rear diff.
2. remove rear prop shaft and take for a drive - if no whine it's the rear diff or gearbox/txfr box.
3. remove front prop shaft and take for a drive - if no whine it it's the front diff or gearbox/txfr box
4. remove both front & rear props - start up and put in gear - if whine it's the gearbox or txfr box.
5. are you sure it's not a knackered wheel bearing? jack up each corner, rotate wheel and check for noise/feel.

Thankyou good tips here, I will start with the oils and check the wheel bearings I can manage that, it’s booked in for a service in two weeks time so I will get them to check the other stuff, just what I needed to hear

O **** I checked the transfer box oil which was ok went to the rear diff needed just a little oil, Done up the filler and the bloody thing disappeared into the diff!!!!? Luckily it’s a Salisbury so off with the back plate now waiting for a new gasket, is this a stupid design or perhaps it’s me that’s stupid, a call to my local independent who burst our laughing and said the times he has heard this over the years

Can you weld a little tab on the inside of the back plate to prevent this happening again?

I have the same issue with mine if I am not careful. Tyr a couple of wraps of ptfe before refitting the plug it stops it vibrating loose, and helps it seal. Think they may be supposed to be tapered but not 100% on that.

You would think they would be tapered wouldn’t you, I have just put it back in now and put some ptfe tap on too and done it so its level with the case it’s not tight though, it’s the sort of mistake you only make once!!!! my friend a complete Landrover freak has done it too years ago but only once.

Hello, did you resolve the whine? We have a new to us 1997 Defender tdi with a whine present in all gears, barely audible in 1st-2nd unless you go very high on RPM's but screams at you in 3rd-5th. No noise when you let off the accelerator.

I haven’t fixed it yet a job for the new year but 90% certain it’s the transfer box, the engine and gearbox have only done 90000 miles but the transfer box 190000 so a new box and clutch whilst there will be the name of the game.

Thanks for the reply, and Happy Holidays! Please keep us updated, I'm changing transfer fluid today and will be removing prop shafts, etc to troubleshoot further.

If it's quieter in 4th, that would suggest to me it's the primary gearbox (probably an R380 on a 1997 model). Fourth gear effectively latches the input and output shafts together so, whilst the gears are turning, they're not transmitting any load and hence quieter. Another symptom I got with my R380 as it was wearing out is that it was noisy on the overrun - if you took your foot off the accelerator suddenly the noise would increase and change in pitch.

So that's just my experience. Fortunately, I don't wear gearboxes out very often, so it's not extensive, but it might tell you something.

Thanks for the input Brown, and don't want to take the thread over old chap. Mine is still very loud in 4th as it is in 3rd or 5th. I have no whine noise when the foot is off the accelerator. It's only when the foot is on the accelerator that it whines. This dropbox video link shows 1) a test drive, the break in the whine is when we remove foot then re-apply gas 2) my gearbox drain plug 3) the fluid that came out of my gearbox

I've not heard a gearbox make a whine quite like that before. Certainly looks like way more steel (and I think I see bronze in the oil?) than I'd want though. Is it completely silent in the lower gears? Have you changed the transfer box oil?

(Might be a good idea to start a new thread though).
