Hi All.
As some may know i picked up my very first land rover last year and have slowly been working through the long list of things that need addressing!
Mechanically she is running well now...stops,starts and drives and even has a working, modified heater!
So i have decided to have a go at painting her with coach enamel by hand! Not too sure what to expect results wise but i thought i may start this thread and maybe it can help someone who may be a cheap skate like me! :)
im not sure how long this will go on for so please bear with me,im hobbling around on crutches at moment waiting for a decision on what to do about my busted leg :-/ plus point is i have plenty of time off work and the sun is shining!
So here she is awaiting strip down and getting used to her new home!

Keep the info coming I'm about to coach paint mine again after magnificently cocking it up last time. I learned a few lessons but would love to see if you have any tips too.

Will do...have a few more pics I'll post up shortly.Any tips you can share to help me avoid cocking it up?! I'm guessing that's it's all about the prep....the boring part!

I got my paint from Paintman but it reacted badly with the primer. Prep is everything, I've taken 1 door right back to the bare metal and I'm using that as my test base until I get it right. Buy the most expensive paint brush you can get too.
If you haven't looked already Paintman website has instructions on coach painting. If you get it right, it comes out really lovely.

Thanks for the tip...I got my paint from Smith and Allen.not sure on quality but we'll soon find out! :-/ some of my sanding has gone through to bare metal so guessing I need to etch prime those bits?there are about 3 previous layers of paint on mine!

My top tips for prep are
1. Buy a DA sander if you don't already have one, leccy is fine but get one with variable speed. A DA will make the job a breeze, you can use 400 grit and paint straight over it.
2. Use compressed air to clean the sanding pads of your DA and they will last ages.
3. On the rounded bits you have to use sand paper (or wet and dry) but DON'T use Halfords paper, it's crap. Get some from a paint shop supplier.

Have DA sander and as you say,its a must.although i havent tried blowing the pads yet..ill give that one a try!going through loads at moment!
Agree about cheap wet and dry...its crap...have some at the moment and it actually falls off the backing paper! :-/
I have already started to paint the doors (off vehicle) and bonnet...quite happy so far...some bits need rubbing back but all in all not bad finish...not showroom but dont want to get to precious over her anyway!

Hopefully gives you some idea of how its coming along....had ago at tinting the second row door glass whilst i was at it...came out well (pity about marks in glass!)
Some rubbing back needing doing where bugs etc have landed whilst drying in sun!

If you check out the paint work of modern cars you'll find the paint finish is no better than yours, so you should be pleased with that.

Hi,
So popped up to see 'Tank' quickly today with my wife, first time she has seen her since being at new home...and good news is the wife approves of colour !!
Wanted to check how first coat dried off,and I'm happy to say it's not too bad at all.few bits need rubbing and another coat but all in all its coming along nicely.I was a little sceptical regarding rollering enamel paint at first but I would definitely recommend it as a cheap, hassle free way to coat you landy.
I'm working on the doors and bonnet in my workshop and will post pics once hinges etc are back on.
I decided to RE use old hinges, just rubbed down and painted with hamnerite,I wanted to avoid the temptation of becoming too 'precious' about finish and all 'new' parts as I still want to use it how its intended to be used!at least this way I can hydrating back and touch up as needed!I also ordered new gaskets and shiny stainless cap head bolts to finish off :)

And a little pic for all you disco lovers out there...tank has someone to keep her company!

So got a few bits done..coated the underside of bonnet with an aluminium paint...going to install some sound proofing at some point!
Also fitted some hinges...mainly just so I could fit some shiny new stainless bolts :)
