spent today cursing wildly..

went to start up the land rover this morning and all it does is take ages to start up and when it does revs out high for about 5 secs and then throttle completely dies and the thing wont turn on again...

im lost as to what it could be?

its a diesel 2.5TD, thought it might be a battery problem but with that charging it still doesnt like to idle, if i leave it for bit after turning it on it will do the same thing again

Cheers

when did you last service it ?

I doubt its a battery problem..it is starting you say..and once a diesel kicks in it shouldn't stop..or rev high then die..

Start with simple stuff, condensation in your fuel filter? Should be able to unscrew the bleedscrew on bottom of that, let it run through for few secs til its pure diesel coming out. Change the filter anyhow..cheap enough. Blocked fuel lines, **** in the injectors..glowplugs need replacing..

As Sean says, give it a basic service..cant go wrong doing that anyhow..

just out of curiosity, what are you doing to the throttle pedal whilst your trying to start it ?

it had a service about 2 weeks ago when i bought it.. which is why its starting to annoy me slightly lol but then its a land rover so its all part of the fun of owning it ;)

while im trying to start it i dont touch the throttle pedal until i hear it kicking in then im trying to rev it a little to see if that will help it.. but then it just seems to lose all response and cut out

check the lift pump, then fuel solenoid - that's assuming there's no split/collapsed hoses and that you did do the fuel/air filters

then the GPs, when it's running lift the oil filler cap off and see if it's pushing out an oilly mist

and if it's done about 140k start thinking about a compression test (or a rebuild/different) engine

damm im gunna have to look through the Haynes manual as im a complete novice when it comes to things like this :(

but dont want to take it anywhere and pay money when im sure i could do it myself.
shame its getting dark now otherwise would have done it now :(

haynes manual wont help much, spend a few hours reading some of the numerous threads on here instead - put yer location up on yer profile, there might be someone close who can came and help for beer and cake

it has just gone over 140k.... lol dayum dont say that because the engine rebuild is going to be about 1k to get that done if it is that thats needed :(

200 TDi conversion would be my first port of call...

im definitel going to check everything first, no point getting rid when it could be a simple solution, will have to look at it during the day to make sure i check everything mentioned here :D

cheers
