Hi Everyone,

Was driving on the motorway all was going well then suddenly I got a funny smell (like clutch slip) then a lost power. Its a 1998 110. Iam pretty new to working on Landrovers so after some guidance.

I have tried selecting hi-low nothing and same with diff locks on. I have disconnected the rear prop shaft when diff locks on and in a gear the housing turns ever so slightly.

What would you recommend next to test.

Thanks
Martyn

Sorry to say if you have the smell of clutch slip it is likely the clutch is not biting and is slipping.
Did this happen while you changed gear?

Yes, I was going up a hill and started to loose power so tried dropping a gear which is when the smell came Then once got otherside of hill lost all power completely.
The gearbox and clutch were replaced just over a year ago. I had propshaft snap and take a chunk out gearbox so had to be replaced.

Sometimes clutches have a disappointingly short lifespan. I had one fail on me after about 18 months and it turned out the splined boss in the middle of the friction plate had come loose and it wasn't transmitting any power. It sounds a bit like the clutch is somehow failing to grip or something like my fault has occurred so it may be time to separate engine and gearbox.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rotational slack. There's often quite a bit in the Land Rover transmission - so many splined components.

That amount of rotational slack pretty normal.
The above type fail is more likely but I have known a clutch slave to stick in the in position. This can happen in an old system due to corrosion, debris in the pipes blocking fluid ways Release slave nipple to check if the case, beware fluid will squirt out,
