A question for any gearbox experts (James martin), what input shaft do I need to fit a RR lt77s to my 110 which had a 2.5NA with a lt77 gearbox still fitted.
It has a weak 2nd gear synchro and also the gear ratio spacing is not good now I've fitted a 300tdi.
The replacement gearbox I have is a lt77s from a 3.9 EFI range rover classic which I understand has the larger layshaft bearings and also wider gears.
The plan is to strip it to replace the selector rod and the 5th gear synchro ring and the other part for that which can't remember what it's called right now, but I don't know what input shaft I need,(new or secondhand if any one has got one for sale) to replace the one which is fitted which is to long.

I don't know much about the conversion but I've heard it's a lot of hassle and cheaper and easier to buy a H suffix or later lt77 gearbox from a defender.
You may even be able to sell both your current boxes and get a reconditioned box from ashcrofts.

Not all that helpful I'm afraid

ftc1428 is input (constant pinion shaft) that you would ned to fit in a rrc lt77s (h suffix though g suffix as well)though rrc and disco rear extention housing differs as does selector rod ,5th gear synchro hub , selector fork and pivot ,it would be easier to fit an ashcroft conversion, you could use your old bellhousing etc

The price of defender gearbox's I think are very high,I visited Ashcroft and met with Dave Ashcroft but he was very busy and I got the feeling he was not really interested,I guess it's easier to sell recon box's than selling parts to people wanting to fix their own gearbox's.

there are other reconditioners , defender lt77s are harder to come by compared to disco just because of numbers built

James I want to use the defender short bell housing so stripping the RRC gearbox to replace the constant pinion shaft I may as well replace the parts you mention at the same time.
Just to clarify is ftc1428 the part needed for a lt77S to be fitted with a defender original 2.5NA lt77 short bell housing.

it is to a rrc or disco g or h suffix, pinions should have 22 teeth, you could use rear parts from box ensuring you use the thicker spacer between 5th gear and rear bearing, 1st and 2nd 3rd and 4th selector forks differ between early boxes and later ones
