You won't get on a classic insurance policy at 17, believe me, i've tried.
With a Defender it seems to be affected more by where you live than anything else, if your out in the sticks you probably will get a half decent quote (still probably be in the £2k+) if your in a built up area, Forget about it.
I'm 20, and when I was looking for quotes on my defender I was struggling to get sub £4k with two years no claims. Got it down to £1200 in the end.

Best advice I had was phone up and don't use comparison sites.
Speak On the Phone to your parents insurance company and see if they can do a deal because they're with them.

*Edit* Just for reference, no specialist companies would insure me because I'm under 21 and I'm with elephant now*

I am on a classic policy and i am 17. There are a few of us on here that are, Footman James will insure 17 year olds on classic Land Rovers.

changing ya job title can make a little difference too.I would pay £80 more as an engineer than a geologist.not a great deal but every little helps

Student job title gets a discount :)
Also being a van driver and have personal use of the van gives very good discount :)
Or push the boat out and say you are a doctor.

My mistake, Was told by them no, maybe they just didn't like me :(

As a second thought on that though, you tend to do a lot of miles in your first year of driving. Just had a quick look on an insurance website:
Driving your vintage car on a regular basis will disqualify you for classic car insurance. A basic limitation imposed by the vast majority of classic car insurers is on the mileage permitted per year and the manner in which that mileage is used. The range is generally 1,500 - 6,000 miles per year. The lower the mileage you limit yourself to, the lower your premium will be.

Worth Baring in mind if you go down that route.

right got a quote bearing in mind this is with a standard 110 v8 ,5000,and in horsham area,so i have decided to go for a series 3 ,witch to me seems a much better choice, lower insurance group, and also cheaper car to run. swb truck cab,2.8 dihatsu engine will this make the insurance go up a **** load ?

2.8 is a modification a non standard engine replacement thusly the insurance will go up

Some insurers will also not insure you on a vehicle over a certain age due to your own age, I had this problem when I was trying to buy an old lightweight

Not loads but it will affect it as it's a mod, I tried to get insured on a 3.2 perkins lightweight and that was a bit higher

At the moment I'm anywhere between £800 - £1050 on a 109" V8

It's a project though so I'll probably not have it on the road til I go past my 2 years NCB which will be next June thus making it cheaper, or if I do get it on the road it will be again something in the region of the prices listed above

The trick is to word your insurance so as to get the most low risk job title whilst still being legal oh and after you pass, pass plus helps on Adrian Flux as does the Proficiency test

well im going to do a driving coarse after my test, and then im gonna try to secure it as best i can but im getting prices of 3k+ with the standard engine atm,on comparison websites, weather that crap or not havent a clue, but i will have a series 3 coz it will be cheaper than a 110 and 90,plus they are just as good if not more fun !just wondering what did u pay for ur first landy, and what landy was it ?

Unless things have changed the cheapest (lowest rated) insurable LR product always used to be a bog standard normally aspirated diesel 90, leaving aside classic policies (which generally won`t be available to 17 year olds), and all other things being equal.
I suspect you will also find anything on coils more suitable as a daily driver, at least if you drive like my son................................

Classic policies through Adrian Flux are sometimes available for 17 year olds

However now the standard TD and Tdi up to the 300tdi are rather cheap to insure
