Well, I need to replace or repair the front axle casing on my 110 86 ex-MOD truck. Had a diff failure last week that punched a hole in the casing... :-(

It is at present epoxied over and should function OK, but I want to either replace the already-beat-up front pan or replace the casing.

It occurs to me that this should be pretty damn close to a late-80s RRC or the like - so what is the word on these bits? Can I get a casing from an RRC or a D1, clean and refurbish that and install it rather than pull, disassemble, weld, paint, clean ad tedium...

they are pretty similar but pre 300 tdi defender axle casings have narrower radius arms though washers welded in will sort that in a disco or rrc case

Thanks. Sounds like I would just need to sort the radius arms with the casing to have an essentially bolt-in setup, or as you say weld in washers (which is a trivial operation)..

Thanks!

Having changed an axle casing due to quite bad rust on the brackets, it's not a quick easy job. If the hole is in the diff pan, I would drop the shafts back. Remove the diff and then weld up the hole or weld on a HD diff pan. If the rest of the axle is poor, like mine was maybe an axle change is worth doing.
