Pulled out my 10 spline diff with an arb air locking unit in to see why it had stopped working (compressor constantly running when engaged)
It had lost a bolt in the housing that holds the housing down hence letting air past the outer seal...

I've drilled and tapped new holes on the round ring and will swap the old bolts for new ones with threadlock on however when I put the ring back on and the two large Allen head bolts that old the bearings in I noticed I have alot of play in the bearing. Is this the bearing or have I put it back together wrongly?
I do own another 10 spline diff, two more infact but I didn't install the arb into that diff so I'm not too sure how to swap the locker itself over
Thanks

bearings need adjusting, presuming the other side hasnt been altered you turn the ring nut till crown wheel has a little backlash and bearings no play

I took both of the bolts from each side before it went in the truck 6-12 months ago. How do I adjust James? I guess it's off to YouTube I go
slack both adjusters , adjust the one nearest crown wheel till theres just no back lash at all, then adjust the other till there is slight backlash about 4 thou or you can just feel some

That's a lot of play considering you haven't touched the adjusters. I would be tempted to have a good look at the bearing races and tracks to make sure there is no damage to them before adjusting.

Might be a good idea to replace the bearings while you have it apart. After all, you don't have your diff apart every day so you might as well refresh as much as you can while you're in there.

I considered it whilst it was out but just wanted it back together. Set the backlash to 4 thou as suggested by Mr Martin, drilled and tapped fresh holes for the o ring seat to clamp down to and tested it on the bench. Very slight loss of air at first from the o rings but the tiny arb compressor didn't have to kick back in. All re fitted. And x amount of other jobs done. Handbrake cable was the worst job!!!

Fair enough then. I put new bearings on mine when I fitted limited slip differentials just over a year ago because the old ones looked like they had some minor fretting on the bearing surfaces. Plus there's not much room to get the jaws of a puller in between the diff carcase and the inner cone of the bearing to get them off, so it's often easier to fit new ones.Yes, I hate messing about with the handbrake. Full of little springs and bits and pieces with nipples on the end that wont fit in their slots.

This was just the cable I had already done the shoes about 6 months ago. The little pin that has the split pin through it was rusted solid. Had to get the grinder in to chop the old cable away. Right nightmare! Still ain't how I like it, maybe the shoes need re doing as I drove with the handbrake on that's why it doesn't work any more...

What limited slip diff and what diff do you have? I'm going to go for a limited slip diff for my Salisbury rear when funds permit

Just had a read through, decent read thanks for that. Would I be correct to say that the ashcroft atb at £295 would only fit a standard rover diff... The Salisbury shocker is 605...

Need to find a cheaper limited slip for the rear of my truck

Just been looking through lockers and at 295 for an ashcroft atb I might scrap the Salisbury rear axle and get myself a disco rear 24 spline on it.....
