well well well, I've now owned my defender for exactly a year now!
a bit of a rollercoaster to be honest, plenty of problems, wallets a fair bit lighter but to be honest I still love it and it wont be leavin me family for fookin donkeys.

the list of problems so far,

Oct 07- UJ's go BANG!
February- Clutch fork breaks, new clutch, clutch fork, slave cylinder
April - backlash issues, new bushes all round on literally EVERYTHING!
July - Clutch Master cylinder is in need of repair

so i guess yeah I've had a year of problems and some a wee bit expensive at that
Everyone comments on why i own th bloody thing, 'get a vectra for arf th money!' they yell

'owever there aint nowt more satisfyin than bein able to go places no one else can, th (usually) friendly waves between defender owners, ya dont get that between saxo drivers or th like do ya!prob more likely to start a fookin fight between themselves!

So if in doubt about if landy ownership is for you.

GO FOR IT!your never look back, I dont regret it one lil bit!

For sale: landrover 90 300tdi in metallic blue, 130000 on clock, perfect nick, flawless, never had a mechanical fook up!;)

kin ell m8, your ownership's lasted 10 months longer than my marriage did:D

don't really sound like a lots gone wrong in comparison with some of the horror stories you read about on here (usually the freelander section)

Had mine for 12 months and so far had to:-
replace the instrument cluster,
the tailgate lock spring
the driver door lock spring
the passengers door lock spring
turbo pipes as they had split
a couple of new bulbs
an intermittent glow plug lamp
all fixed by me (apart from the glow plug warning lamp which is still intermittent)
thought it was going well until todays MOT where it's failed for rust around the rear suspension mount. Going to cost me about £100 to sort plus cost of MOT :-(

:D and you go on about how unreliable Freelanders are and how many problems they suffer from.

I have had my Freelander about 18 months and all it has cost me is the price of an MOT, a service and 2 tyres :)

Dont get me wrong, Kergan - we is all glad for ya - but would you say that was the norm?

 is it an ornament!?!?

:D No, it's stood out the front covered in muck, it gets a regular visit to Salisbury Plain and the Ridgeway is just up the road from here.

I am a photographer and do a lot of work in Scotland photographing castles and scenery so I am always up and down tracks and stuff.

Next trip to to the Highlands is in a few weeks time and it will do about 3000 miles in 2 weeks, I have done about 19,000 in the 18 months I have owned it.

I just don't thrash the backside of it. Never go over 75 - 80

Well I might be lucky I suppose and it is the newer TD4, would not have had one as a petrol.

I know a couple of others with em as well and they don't seem to have to many probs either.

Perhaps Wiltshire is a Freelander happy owner zone.

Mind you one other thing is that I am only the second owner and the woman who had it before me was a teacher who only used it to got to her school and back.

I bought it at 3 years old on the nose and it was in almost new condition with very few miles on the clock.

How much did you pay for your defender and what state was it in when you bought it. Entering in to land rover ownership and wondering whether to get a series III as a second car or go the whole hog and buy a defender to replace my everyday car. Just not sure if I will miss the comfort and speed of my everyday car.

Sounds like next year of ownership might be better for you.

it was in good nick inside and out.has a very solid chassis, bulkhead, crossmember and engine. to be honest I rekon i've jus had a bit a bad luck!if I was any kinda mechanic then alot of th cost would have been saved, i.e labour rates.

paid £6.5k for P reg 300tdi 90 csw.

rekon u shud get a defender especially if ya fear missin a bit of speed. the 300tdi is a very VERY good engine, much more refined than series!plus ya got proper suspension not leaf springs (so a lil more comfortable than a series) I use it for my daily commute too, and its fine on motorway at 60-65, easy in town, parkins a bit of a c'unt with HUGE turnin circle, but all ya hav ta do is plan ahead a bit when drivin/manouverin!:)

Well the welding cost less than estimated so in 12 months of ownership I have spent less than £200 keeping it on the road and when I bought the car I knew that I needed to fix a couple of things.
Considering the age of the car I can't complain and I have managed to do all the work (apart from the welding) myself.
