I bought a 2000 1.8xi Freelander in July with 49k on the clock. Since September I have been adding about a litre of water in to the expansion bottle every week.

I've had it twice in to a (non LR) garage to check what the problem is. There are no visibile signs of leaks, the garage have tested to see if there is any oil in the water etc and they can't identify the problem.

Any ideas? please.

You are probably having the same problem i'm having. - The famous Head Gasket problem. and it will hurt your wallet ALOT!
Does your freelander overheat (see the temp. guage on the dash board)?
my freelander is still with the dealer right now and it is going to cost me £2700 for a new engine. However, if you are lucky, you probably just need to change the head gasket about £600. And Landrover are not contributing to the case (you will see this very common case in the forum). Try some independent landrover specialist, they should be alot cheaper. If you bring it to the dealer, they will charge you 2.5 hrs of labour just to check the problem and your freelander is taken apart so you can't bring it else where to fix it.
GOOD LUCK

Pressure test the coolant system, this should show that the leak is probably head gasket. The coolant will be lost in the exhaust so you will not see a leak.

Thanks for replies. The car hasn't once overheated or shown any signs of having an above normal temperature on the gauge.

I took the car to an independent garage that I know very well. They have done many tests to find the leak, including I think a pressure test, and nothing has surfaced.

I'm still driving it around, mainly town centre driving, and waiting for something to happen now.

What are the 'other' obvious signs of the head gasket going?

there weren't much sign of the head gasket problem. For mine, it's just overheat and lost of coolant. by that time it's too late. Just picked up my car back today with the new engine. performance of the car seems better but paid 2700 plus for it.
