1.4 to 1.2 transfer box cost

Been quoted 500 inc vat waddya think, fair price for a 200tdi 1990,90

Also have read good and bad on this conversion have you done it and if so what do you think

for what just t/box , recon or just used ,including fitting ?

Getting a better picture now, the ones on ebay look good value.

What do you consider a reasonable price to fit?

you can pick up decent non rebuilt for 50-80quid

fitment is only a few bolts, swap handbrake and might as well replace seals and new oil.

pretty easy job.. you could always try it yourself

I reckon a decent garage should be quoting you about 4-5 hours labour for removal and refit of replacement transfer box. It might take a bit longer I suppose if bolts are seized sheared etc.

Where would you find a 1.22 transferbox for 80

I sold one that had done 38k for 50 quid, so they are out there.

also got one in my shed, but i'm not selling it atm

500? Bloody hell. Do they galv your chassis for you as well at that price? My 1.2 box included a cross drilled input gear and new timken bearings. Seals and gaskets were cheap and it cost me the square root of bugger all to fit it myself

Got a quote for 100, will look around for a decent box and I think I will be good to go, to summarise what I have learnt so far that the conversion offers smoother motorway driving with less noise offset against reduction in towing prowess and unfamiliar characteristic defender gear changes?

depends n what tyre size and what you want etc.

on motorways it's good as it means the revs are dropped

on hills not so good, on large tyres it's not meant to be so good

low box is unaffected

1.19 box 235/70 29inch tyres ok
1.19 box 7.50 31 inch tyres not so good
1.19 box 33.5 inch tyres bloody hell forget hill starts!
1.4 box 33.5 inch tyres I can live with that
Basically for normal work std 1.4 is fine, if you want quieter car for motorway work you bought the wrong sort of ####ing car!

I sold a transfer box last week for £30 and I wouldn't consider it a massive job to replace. How handy are you mate?

I know someone breaking a 300 tdi disco in Mansfield mate do you want me to ask him how much?

Totally agreed that £500 is way too much for a second hand box and labour. You could get a rebuilt box including fitting for that. I'm running a 1.2 on my 110 with big tyres. I certainly wouldn't want to any bigger with that ratio. It does make it a lot better on motorways. Ive only ever struggled once on a very steep hill start and almost had to stick it in low range. This was mostly caused by an incorrectly adjusted throttle cable though.
