So the Freelander has been with the mechanic now for three days and he now been checked from head to toe. The problem that caused the error code was a faulty connection on the fuel rail sensor. Fixed the connection and cleared the error code and this is now resolved.

The problem with the car loosing power still remains despite the whole fuels system having been checked and every possible sensor checked. The turbo also looks ok. The mechanic has some pretty hard core Bosch diagnostic tools so he is now in the process of meticulously checking all info on the computer as the engine runs while driving the car.

It is clear that the car is does not have power when hot. What is causing it is still a mystery although the mechanic this afternoon was considering re-checking the high pressure fuel pump although he did check it before.

At least I know that all the other systems in the car is in good health.

I have empathy for you with these hard to diagnose faults. I also have little technical knowledge of the turbo system so can't really offer any reliable advice! I would though say to be very careful with so called "expert garages" - plenty of horror stories on here of so called experts not getting things right - I've had first hand experience that's wasted me $1,000s on my old Disco.

By LZ's standards you haven't had a lot of input on this problem, it presumably isn't a too frequent problem. As this is a BMW engine, have you tried the BMW forums, eg...

Ok. Got the Freelander back today. The entire fuel system was tested as well as the injectors, turbo, fuel rail, all possible sensors ect. The only things that they could find wrong was a poor connection on the fuel rail sensor. This was fixed band the fault code is now gone but it did not cure the power problem.

The only other thing that they could find was one of the vacuum pipes that was blocked so they replaced all the vacuum pipes.

This seems to have helped as the car has not lost power since.....(yet...)

For all their effort, it cost me just about 600 South African Rands which is about 45 pounds UK I would guess.

Time will now tell if the problem is actually cured.

At least I know that all the expensive stuff such as the injectors, turbo, high pressure fuel pump ect checks out.
