Hi, can anyone please help?
I started to replace my alternator when I noticed some play in the water pump (up down not end float).
Does the water pump have some play in it or do I need a new water pump?
Re’ the alternator it seized on me and snapped the belt, the RAC took me home on the back of a transporter.
Thanks John.

If you have play in it, I would recommend you replace it.

I have just had a new water pump fitted (2nd one, 1st was 3 years ago) . If you look at it, there is alot of wieght on the shaft because you have the large viscous fan on one end and a little impellar on the other.

Mine recently failed droping all its water on the deck when parking, so it didn't over heat. My car was booked in anyway 2 days later for head gasket replacement, so was glad it was then. The bearing failed and all the water came out of the shaft.

The pumps are about £75, after my headgasket repair I found out that I needed a new alternator which I found strange since it never overheated but I was unfortunately in the hands of the garage, but as you know these are not cheap (I paid £415+vat for alternator).

Moral of the story is if you have any little leaks on your water system get them fixed and don't just keep topping them up, it will cost you big in the end also find out the root cause of the leak, is it just wear and tear or is it somthing more serious.

Already ordered the water pump from Famous Four at a cost of £90 including p&p and VAT, the alternator was a second hand unit at a cost of £174 from a breaker (findapart.com).
I got the car in Feb this year :) and it's been using about 2lts of water every 2 weeks with no signs of a leek . I have had the sniffer test done and been pressure tested and the results were ok :). I was told by the garage that it was the radiator, so I replaced the rad, expansion tank, top and bottom rad hoses and it still used about 2lts every 2 weeks. Fingers crossed this will sort it.:)

its got to be going somewhere?? have you checked your oil for a sludge looking substance if you have this in your oil it means the water is leaking into the oil system, maybe head gasket failure?? :(

Also have a look at the back of the engine, as there are a few pipes at the back that may leak especially if they have been used for gas conversion. If you remove the plastic part that houses the pollen filter and get right up on the engine and have a good look down there.

Hope you've sorted it anyway and don't forget to bleed your system with the plastic screw on the expansin tank.

I would suggest you get a spare water pump gasket as it is a fiddly bugger to fit, it keeps sliding off the pump when your trying to lower it into position lining up the bolts, what i do ( probally a cheat ) is fix the new gasket to the pump with sikaflex the night before, it makes reasembly much easier, also put a wee bit of gasket sealer on the small rubber o rings on the metal pipe when you refit it, makes it slide in much easier.
