Wipers are playing up!

They seem to stick about half way and dont want to move unless i manually unstick them.

Spindles are fine. So motor or gearbox? Or both?

Is there anyway to get some grease in there without stripping the dash down?

Nope to the grease.
Remove the dash top & see if the tube clamp(if loose can cause the worm to come off the gear)
You may be able to remove to grease depending on the dash(early ones you can)
By removing rear of spindle box and then removing motor.
Some one did but some very expensive wheel boxes but as the search is funked ....

Yes, I've had that problem too. The rack tries to jump a tooth on the gear wheel and jams itself. Even if you switch the wipers off, the motor is still being supplied by the park switch, so it is apt to bake itself. I just put in a new motor, rack and wheelboxes on mine over Christmas as a result of this problem occurring. I didn't fancy a wiper failure on the motorway on a wet day. There's very little option other than to dismantle the dash, unfortunately. That's what takes all the time. Changing the components themselves over is relatively quick and easy.

Same. Slight worry... Just rainXd the windscreen for a bit of extra help

Worth doing the motors too? Pass side is a little noisey but nothing major.

Im guessing its gearboxes + new cable?

If the motor is still running then maybe it's OK. I have cooked a motor and blown the fuse as a result of the wipers jamming. It's just a single motor inside the passenger trim. I changed the wheelboxes, rack/cable and motor at Christmas and it's been OK since. I've been replacing wiper components since 2013, so some of the things I changed around then have started causing problems again. My reliability was also improved by changing the wiper relay. It's one of the ones behind the instrument cluster, but I can't remember which. The old one fell to pieces in my hand, and I replaced it with a more expensive Lucas unit which has been OK these past 5 years or so.
Where's the Defender Upgrades wiper kit? I had a look at their site but can't seem to see anything suitable. Could you post a link? If anybody were to market a more reliable system than the standard Land Rover one, I might be interested in buying it.

Ahh ok gotcha. Not bad, just got two genuine LR gearboxes and pulley for £80 off island. Hopefully they arrive Friday and I can get to it then along with a long list of other things!!

They look nicely made. And a nice price too. On the standard ones so much depends on how accurately the sheet metal has been bent and how well the gear wheels have been peened onto the spindles, and the tolerances are quite relaxed in some cases!

Good to know :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hopefully these will be alright!

Also.picked up a park switch just incase.

Just thought I REALLY hope the motor is in good nick. Cant imagine itll be simple to remove with the AC in the way.

No problem, it's above the air conditioning unit. It's held by a U shaped clip with a big crosshead screw at each end. It's just behind that moulded bit of plastic with the shelf cast into it. If you want to take the rack/drivewire off and change it, it's easier to do so if you take the motor off. And it's easier to change the wheelboxes if you've taken the motor off and withdrawn the drivewire.

I've never tried this, but is it possible to get to the motor end of the drive cable and rotate it with the wipers off until the wiper spindles have turned 180? The cable wire wound as a spiral so its like a worm gear.

If you remove the dash top & undo the wheel boxes nuts. Remove wipers & adapters then push the spindles in you can turn them 180’ then replace all items removed.

I suppose in theory yes. But in practice, as the motor is only held on with a clip with two screws on it (and I only undo one, and bend the clip to release it) it is easier to whip the motor out, rotate the spindles and feed it back in. You can get the drive wire off the motor but it is more faff than doing as above. Rotating the spindles might buy you a little time, but once it has started doing that it needs either serious adjustment (bending the cable guide in a fraction) or replacement.
