’HDC Fault, System Not Available’’ with 3 warning lights.

Hi guys,

Freelander 2 question.

I have a fault on the car that says ‘’HDC Fault, System Not Available’’ with 3 warning lights.

The car drives fine but the ABS light is One of the lights that is on!

I took the car to be serviced and mentioned the fault. He said he would take a look at it and ring me if he could fix the problem.

On collecting the car he said he has not serviced the car as there is a major electrical fault and might not be worth it (car is worth about 4 grand) he said he changed the rear ABS sensor but problem persists and charged me £170 for the privilege.

He then gave me the address of a garage that specialising in electrical faults.

I’m fuming as I feel the sensor was replaced but didn’t need to be?

And where do I go from here? If the computer is not reading the sensor but the sensor is brand new, what do you guys think the problem could be? I want to sound like I have some understanding of the problem so I don’t get ripped off!

I noticed people talk of battery? Would that have been picked up on the computer? As I do tend to get through batteries due to short drives with the dog.

If it anything like ye olde Freelanders 1s the Three Amigos can be TC switch on the gear stick (yellow trigger) Brakelight Switch or ABS rings sensors near replacing. ABS can be tricky because you need he computer to indicate which one to clear off the system. Normally a code will show. Brake light switch is simple to replace but you will need a wall to shine brake lights or have someone tell you here not working. The TC on the Gearstick sits below with gaiter removed which could be worn or broken. Battery can trigger anomalies to warn you of the dreaded doom of flat battery time. Technically their not flat but under a couple of volts to upset the onboard computer. Clearly your garage man is doesn't have diagnostic tool because that should read faults my guess. There should be a few fellow Freelander drivers who give better advise shortly. Fret not sire.

thanks. Yeah he was clueless. He said he plugged it into the computer and it showed a fault with the rear right sensor and he changed it but the fault was still there ‍

I’ll check the brake light thanks. I’m worried the car will not get through the MOT so need to get it sorted.

You need the codes from the ABS module. There's no point in trying to diagnose a fault without the codes.
I seriously doubt it'll be anything too expensive, and definitely a lot less to fix than the value of the vehicle.

Take it to someone who knows how to use a diagnostic device, and come back here with the codes, before committing to having any work done.
