hi guys, hope someone can help me, getting really p**sed off with r/r vouge 2001. had new battery fitted about 13 months ago. last winter battery kept going flat. disconnected rf reciever every thing fine up to about 3 weeks ago. battery flat as fook. recharged worked ok for about a week, then went flat again, recharged again eveything ok until yesterday?? flat as fook again, this is really starting to p**s me off. any ideas as to why it is going dead ? and what is the answer to my problem? any help would be appreciated.

electrical fault causing a short somewhere. fit a battery isolator switch somewhere hidden, will also act as a means to stop it getting stolen.

This happened to one of our cabs a short time ago and the cause was found to be a loose connection in the block connector at the back of the alternator. This showed enough charge to turn ignition light off but not enough to put plenty of back up into the battery.

It is of course, possible for the battery to have developed a fault in a plate somewhere and cause these symptons, have you had it put on a battery analyiser at battery shop.

Have you had the regulator pack in back of Alternator tested, these is well known to cause battery drain. Depending on age of alternator it's possibly more ecconomical to replace whole Alternator, even though the regulator pack is very easy to replace, once you pull the alternator off the car and pull the thing apart, you may as well be replacing bearings, bush and get com machined etc while you're in there, which will cost almost as much as exchange unit.

had exact same problem on mine mate. Turned out the alternator wasn't charging under load. Got a 2nd hand alternator for 35 quid and now sorted.

good advice matey, replacing the old alternator with a new/recon one is also a lot easier than re-conning it yourself.

put in another earth lead from battery to alternator bracket, shouldnt cost more than a fiver. this should rule out poor earth connections.

Same prob with mine too, i've put it down to only doing short trips 1.5 miles twice a day and so much electrics on the car so its not gettting time to charge back up this time of year with the lights wipers and heated windows all on.

Ive cut myself down to side lights when i can get away with it, no stereo, and only 1 heated screen if i can't see were i'm going. lo

I had the same problem almost 2 years ago. After a lot of checking and a new battery we finally found out what the problem was. It all came down to where we were parking. We were parking about 30m away from a bank and what was happening was that the security system in the bank was interfering with the alarm system in our P38 and in short, it was draining the ruddy thing. This might not be your problem but it might be worth looking into.

Is a battery charger out of your price range?:D

Bad idea on a P38. It'd take half an hour to start it each time, what with resynching your key etc...

True but there's a way around that, with an in-line fuse like so

Battery Isolator Disconnect Switch with In-line fuse on eBay (end time 03-Dec-09 01:33:36 GMT)

But don't start it by accident when its set, the fuse blows (its meant to) and you have to replace the fuse, and after 20 seconds of no power you have to put all the codes in to start it, unless your real fast and screw the knob back on within the 20 seconds then it will be ok, the in line fuse keeps your alarm and radio etc, set

so there are pros and cons using this system
