Squeeling belt??
The Penny Trick:
  1. remove belt
  2. back of the single stud holding in the tensioner
  3. put a penny in the 9 o'clock position
  4. tighten back up, put belt back on.

Hi all. 1994 M Reg. 300 TDi.
I changed my Timing Belt and Serpentine Belt yesterday. Squeeling started about 2 minutes into test drive. I will do the penny trick tonight when I get home 'cos I believe wot you say.
But can anyone explain exactly what is squeeling (its like a budgie wanting feeding!) and how the penny trick actually stops the squeeling? Is it 'cos the new belt is tighter than the old one? Does this indicate a problem with the tensioner or its design ? (Just curious).

Thanks Gals and Guys.

the tensioner roller is acutually 'out of true' the penny brings it back in line Its a manufacturing fault on these engines. Replace the bearing £5 off ebay. instructions are in this forum.

Is the bolt for the belt tensioner a left or right handed thread? Mines tight as ****.

the stud bolt is a normal right hand thread, the bolt on the roller is left hand thread. crack the left hand thread while the tensioner is still on the engine when you come to change the bearing....

Just done the penny trick, That noise has been driving me mad for weeks. iIfitted a new belt and bearing, still it came back. Not anymore. Thanks.

You're a legend!
I seriously couldn't work out what the noise was... I'll try it out tomorrow, because it's one bastard of a noise it makes.

Cheers
Todd
