Freelander Towbar Fitting Instructions

Does anyone have a copy of the fitting instructions for an STC50391 towbar they could email me, or do you know where I can find them on the net.
The thing I really need to know is where to plug the wiring on the towbar into the loom of the Freelander.

Hi

I fitted a swan neck towbar and it is held on by six bolts, there are three where the heat deflector is above the exhaust tailpipe and three more needed for the other side. The wiring is plugged into a white connector behind the trim on the right side, and a gromet is pushed through above the exhaust which is below the socket.

hi depends on towbar should have 3 13mm bolts each end and 2 15/16mm bolts go up through into rear crossmember normally covered by round black sticky pads to protect threads,the towbar eletrics as rightly said behind rear right hand quarter white connector face of it just hid behind metal look into hole,dont forget to fit relay for indicators hope this helps tiga,.
PS. you may have to tap the towbar up as sometimes the brackets can be slightly bent on towbar,and the heat deflector plate above exhaust sometimes has plate welded in in correct place so tight to get towbar up tap with soft hammer and MIND YOUR HEAD!

I fitted a tow bar recently on a td4 quite simple as the Tig said mind your head, but on the electrical side you have a choice. . . [1] wire it using the L/R socket kit very fiddly[ lotta dosh system] , or [2] wire it using connectors or crimps [the jock , peel an orange in ya pocket ,cheaper option] all the connections are on the rear ,[hing side] plastic panel , if you want to do it yourself send me an e mail and i will send you the wiring codes. . . i used push on crimps for quick dissconection also a relay buzzer [make's a buzz as you indicate] but this is not really needed,

Thanks for the advice. I will attempt to fit it over the weekend. The towbar is a Landrover part so wiring has the correct plug on it, I just wasn't sure where the socket is for it.
Does the advice about an extra relay being needed mean that the indicators on a trailor will not work with out it?

No indicators wont work correctly and the trailer light will not flash on the dash,needs bigger relay to run the extra bulbs,tiga

How do I know what model, type of towbar I have bought? Just bought one from a breakers yard. It's got two sockets on it, one for a caravan (it's white) the other is for a trailer (it's black) and it's got two sets of wiring for it (as you would expect with two outlets).

I get the idea with the 3 bolts either side, but the wiring instructions are what I started looking for on the web (when I found you all) so how would I know what to look for please?

I think you will find the the Black socket is for Trailer or Caravan..etc.
The White one or Grey one would be for running you caravan directly fro your car or charging your caravan battery,..
Not sure of the wiring but i'm sure you will get the help you need here if your patient..

For the caravan plug you'll need a relay switched from the Alternator & a live feed from the battery This ensures that the battery/fridge is only charged when the engine is running. Halfords do the wiring kit with instructions.

Hi Guys – I have a Freelander 2 with the sports styling kit and would like to fit a towbar.

I have just had a quote back from Pentland Land Rover in Edinburgh for £616.99 to supply and fit!!

Fixed height towbar £276.57
Bracket (req’d for sports styling kit) £28.13
Electrics N/S £312.29


Given that I only want to tow my boat to the loch and then drop it in and out twice a year this seems pretty extortionate – anybody have any ideas on whether this is a typical cost (and where I could get it done cheaper) or how difficult it is (specifically the electrics) to fit yourself?

Really appreciate any help!

the price is an outrage ! do a search on ebay to find out how much the parts are. then if you don't fancy doing it yourself, have a ring round some local towbar fitting companies, some will come to you if you wish. I think you'll find you can get it quite a lot cheaper.

Although mine is a freelander 1, the towbar cost £85 from ebay and took and hour and a half to fit including the single electrics.

If you're only towing a boat and never intend towing a caravan, just go for the single electrics to power lights and indicators on trailer. No point having the split charge doubles if your not towing a caravan.

this does gloss over the problem of it being fitted with the sports bumper, maybe ring just tow and ask. worst case you're going to have to cut the oh so pretty bumper yourself. This was just the first search, so if you go through them all, you might even find a kit to suit the bumper.

Check for it over the internet. You will get lots of manual there.

bought towbar kit for a 2006 freelander from pf jones ltd on e bay,it came with all reqd bolts,washers etc also tow ball and electric socket, cost £75 took only 3/4 hour to fit towbar,tho i recomend tapping out the three fixing points on nearside with a 10x1.5 mm tap to clear threads as were very dirty tapping out made life a lot easier,wiring up was done with scotchlocks entirely on o/s rear wiring behind boot trim, all in all simple job.

hi i am currently bidding on a second hand genuine tow bar for my 2009 freelander 2 and it still has all the connections i know how to fit the actual tow bar but will the electrics just plug into my freelander or will i have to chop wires and use scotch locks to connect it up? i notice there is a plug in boot on passengers side under the little compartment it that the plug i use or is there another plug somewhere on the car

The harness is plug n play, but you need the towing module (pretty cheap second hand on ebay) and then the CJB needs programming to activate the towing strategy, which prevents the PDC from working when the trailer is connected.

sorry you may think these are stupid questions but where is the plug in point on the freelander 2 and what is the CJB AND PDC and how can i get the CJB programmed. sorry I'm totally new to land rovers
