I am in exactly the same boat, 1992 200TDi as my first Landy - except my UJs are definetly well on their way out. Fitting them shouldn't be too much of a problem for me but I'm not sure about what to buy. I was about to post much the same thread, so any information will be greatfully recieved...

If you want them to last more than the weekend buy hardy spicer ones or gkn(same thing).
As for the ps. something quick question. Feckin hell that is not a somethin quick question. Do a search it's all in here somewhere.

ONLY use Hardy Spicer/GKN ones. Ever.

You replace them when they wear, its not like an oil change that you jus 'do'

First sign of them failing is usually a grinding, twittering, scraping, wobbling, juddering, etc etc delete as applicaple that appears either on accelleration, overrun, or coasting.

:)

To check:
Get Friend
Put Friend on brake pedal, with release of brakes on pain of death
Release Handbrake
Get under the LR, and pull the props about in all directions - if there is ANY play noticeable in the UJ's at the ends, visible or merely feelable, repalce it. Be aware there will be some rotational play as the slack is taken up in the transmission.

Any movment in the UJ's, between yokes etc, new UJ time.

Any play between the two sliding parts of the prop, new prop.

Keep them well greased, and they should, if you ONLY used Hardy Spicer/GKN ones, last years.

Oh yeah, only bother with Hardy Spicer ones.

If you ignore the warning signs and dnt replace worn ones, then eventually the cup will wear away, and the UJ will run on the yoke. This WILL make it wear very quickly, fail, usually at speed, resulting in most of a prop flailing around under you LR with enough force to easily smash holes in your chassis/gearbox/floor/tank whatever it hits.

Costs £5 to replace a UJ dnt bother takin it to a garage, tis easy.

:) Thats all!
