Hi all last night i went out with a friend and when i came back i started the 1986 2.5 n/a 90 as per usal 9 seconds on the glow plugs and away she went, then i put me little hand throttle on which is just a stick which helps her warm up quicker 5mins later i went back to her and chucked my coat in the back and she started reving realy high then a knocking noise occuerd and this is the problem, what made her rev up and not stop as she just stopped reving on her own. Then i revved her and she got stuck on again with the knocking! so we had a quick look under the hood and found that two of the rocker cover bolts had come loose so i drove round the block and everything was ok, then i drove about twenty miles back home and she didnt miss a beat so what could it have been?
Cheers

does it pant through the oil filler orifice when the cap is off ?

sounds like it's started to run off the oil, if your already loosing some oil through the cover screws there's a good chance the engine's days are numbered

do a search for crankcase pressurisation

Sounds like the idle speed governor is sticking with some crud - this is an extreemly sensitive (well the whole pump is really) part of the pump and can be sent haywire at the slightest spec of dirt.

I stripped my 2.5na pump down a few months ago and found it to be what can only be described as animal hair blocking the governor.

You could try cleaning it out, I put kero in the filter and pumped that through, that didn't work so I used acetone - the idea with acetone is to pump it in let it dissolve any crud then pump it all out with fresh diesel. I got a lot of black gunk out of mine.

In the end I took the IP off, partially stripped it cleaned it and it worked no bother.
