Can anyone tell me how to find out...

...if my Defender has been chipped?

I've just bought my first Defender. Very pleased with it too. The guy selling it told me he believed the previous owner had had the injectors chipped. At the time I said "great" ...but didn't have a clue what he meant.

I've since Google'd and discovered what the benefits are etc etc.

However - for the life of me - I can't find a single website which shows or tells me how I can find out if my Defender has (or has not) actually been chipped.
What am I looking for?
What does it look like?

I appreciate I don't 'need' to know. It's just curiosity now. And, from what I've read, both on this forum and elsewhere on the web, it may well be £450 well spent on getting it done if it's not already, (however, I'd look a total t*** if I ask for it to be chipped when it has already!).

This is my first post to this forum. I've searched on here too for a similar post, but with no joy.

I should just add also I've spent the last 2 hours reading posts on this forum... I see myself losing many more hours reading other posts/replies, admiring your Landy pictures and taking on board good advice.

I've had my windscreen chipped, that's quite noticeable but doesn't make it go any faster

err - no. (unless you're talking windscreens, like Sean).

Chipping refers to the reprogramming of the ECU to boost fuel pressures and turbo activation, the only way to tell is if you get a main stealer to look at the ECU and they should be able to identify if it has or not been chipped or modified. If it has they could say it invalidates any warranty that may be left on the vehicle. I guess it must be a td5 or newer engine that you have as earlier ones could not be chipped?

Alternatively you could try another one and see if yours is faster. Or try this. Put yours in 4th gear and time it from 30 to 60 on a flat road. Post the time and I'll try mine (which is standard) and we can compare, assuming yours is a TD5.

Landy10 - thanks for the advice. Yes, 2002 TD5.

Lightning - when I was test driving a few this one did seem a bit quicker - but it's hard to tell when you're driving different Defenders on different days. Your grand plan sounds fun. Will try it tomorrow and post the results tomorrow evening. I take it your name "Lightning" has nothing to do with the fitting of nitros/flux capacitors a la Back to the Future.

i like me potatoes chipped...........but find this looses me power as i pile on the pounds the more i eat!!

why wud u chip a landrover as its not exactly the most aerodynamic vehicle!!
Liken it to a breeze block on wheels......but when they bring in Landy drag racing you will have the edge!!

hi mate tried the test out today 30mph to 60 mph was 11 seconds in fourth gear
(that is approxamate ) did'nt have a chronograph just the second hand on me watch.

by the way mine is standard (99% sure )
will know come next tuesday when it goes into the slealers for warranty work .
got a ingresse of water into the ECU compartment WTF!!!

i'll try it in my 300tdi although if too many bits start flying off i'll have to abort

i better take a sleepin bag and a change of clothes with me too.......
