They told me today that it is the head gasket but they will skim the head as a normal precaution. I thought you cant skim a td5 head?

I think my head gasket has been changed before so would they as part of the course skimed the head? If so mine may not have enough left to do again . I take it they changed the gasket on yours without skiming the head first time round ratty?

YES. Mines been skimmed twice too. A thicker gasket is used to compensate for it. Make sure that whoever does it fits the steel dowels. Mine still had nylon ones although it had been done before.

Thicker gasket didnt know they they could do that but its the first bit of good news Ive heard all day thanks mate. Ive told them about the dowls they said that the steel dowls come in the kit now

Remove the noise reducing cover off the top of the engine. As you look into the engine bay the front right of the engine has a tab stuck out of the head gasket with holes in it. The number of holes tell you the gasket thickness that is currently in place.;)

good to know but to late for me they (main steelers) have her now

Don't you have an independent landrover specialist in your neck of the woods? The job should be just as good but the labour cost halved. I paid for mine to get done by the engineer who was skimming the head cos it wasn't much more than the cost of me doing it myself and I get a no arguement warantee.

If you did get the engine a bit too hot you may find that it's blown the fuel cooler. You'll know if you have cos the diesel will get into your coolant. They are £230. I have killed 2 and am about to fit the third tomorrow.

The only place is 25 miles away and they are very good The landrover garage is 100 yards up the road . I was afraid to drive that far in case I ****ed the motor compleatly. I put the pistons through the head of a fista xr2 almost 20 years ago and that was a very expensive lesson. If I ever destroy an engine again it wont be my falt

I got her back today . Im 1000 euros lighter 650 of that is labour but the engine bay looks like new and she goes as good as it ever did. Im happy but poor
