Going fording last night and unless I just tickled the water at less than tickover I got a flicker from the battery light..? Whhhyyyy?

Spray water replaent all over the alternater and any other leccy bits might help.

may as well this time of year but would'nt do without it or a kenlow fan in the summer (but only if it gets hot next year

I wudn' get rid of the fan til you got summin to replace it with.
I have no fan, and driving aloing normally is fine, but if you actually wanna use your LR it will suffer - i almost boiled my 300 t'othr day, tow starting an old van, 4000 RPM in second gear, full throttle, not really moving all that fast, it got a bit warm.
Also the alternator brushes sometimes get water in them it goes out again.

Dunno which engine you've got, but on the 19j the belt also drives the power steering pump.

Shudn do, the correct set up has the PAS pump on a belt of its own, or with the air con.

Yeah the disco 300tdi steering gets a bit heavy if you go through a bit puddle fast.

it was an option on even the very early 90's and 110's, look in your advertising brochure!
