you dont think hakett and john have the same missus and she just likes range rovers do ya??? it's getting like jeremy kyle in here!!!!!

If she is the same then hackett can have her cos all shes giving me at the minute is ear ache. lol:p :p

well i've decided to buy her a saxo for £700 and i'm going to sell the rangie in its current state and buy a new motorbike......any one want a perfectly good/hot range rover for a grand??

i'm very tempted but her indoors thinks RR's are a waste of space, she would flip if i bought a broken one aswell!!!!

where in the country are you?

Right my thermostat, water pump, hoses and rad all showed up this morning, so loaded them into the rangie and set of on my way to the garage the temp gauge went upto half way and stayed there so i thought i would give it a bit of drive to see how long it would take to overheat.
90 miles later and the temp did not go over half way.

So do i assume it is ok or do i go ahead and change all the parts?
Also could the waterfall that came out of the expansion tank just have been a massive air lock?

Erm, don't count your chickens and all that.

When I got mine back from it's resto work, I drove from the North of Sheffield to the South of Sheffield in the middle of Friday evening rush hour. The temp gauge never went above 70, bearing in mind that it had the same symtoms as yours before it went in to have all the resto work done.

The following morning I drove it 2.1 miles when all of a sudden the temp gauge shot from 70 to 120 in the blink of an eye, followed by huge clouds of steam from the back.

Previously a gas test in the expansion tank had drawn a blank too, hence why I assumed it was a faulty temp sender or gauge.

have you checked the water level? it does sound like an air lock to me but then again many symtoms often have different causes.

has there been a change in temp of heater, radiator or any change in feel of hoses?

The water level has not moved and i had the heater on in the car all day and that also stayed hot.

Ok all, it seems that i am back to square one the rangie decided to overheat again.
left it for half hour then tried again got about 30 miles and it overheated again and again and again.
There was no water loss but the heaters inside was not hot this time...
Its just a never ending story would it have been that hard for land rover to put a bleed valve on the damn things?

UPDATE:

I have been out since 6am trying to sort the rangie out and i have just noticed that the driver side footwell is slightly damp but only right up against the seat base any ideas on what it could be?
As i am about to change everything on the cooling system so could i be barking up the wrong tree changing the rad, thermostat and pump???

Hello John, You prolly need to do a cooling system pressure test to veryify the source of that interior leak.

As far as the temperature problem is concerned, why change everything? They cant all be duff. It seems like a classic air-lock problem combined with a need for flushing and back-flushing.

See if you can adapt this process to your car.

I have now changed the water pump and thermostat and so for (5 days) no overheating but its still loosing water and the interior carpet is damp on the drivers side.
I have read somewhere that a wet carpet on the drivers side is usually the heater o rings can someone let me know if this is correct??
Also the book symbol on the climate display comes on as and when it feels like it, does anyone have any ideas on what this could be.

Hello John,

Its gonna be those O rings, hose clips, pipes or matrix. I dont know which side they are on, but does your workshop manual show the heater matrix layout?

As you continue to lose water then air will get in to replace the water and your overheating problem may return to plague you.

Regarding the water in the footwell, can you peel back the carpet to allow it to pool, then sample it to see if it has that distinctive sweet smell/taste of antifreeze. If not sure, sample the antifreeze from the system to compare.

Now would be a good time to do a cold pressure test on the coolant system and listen or feel for escaping water in the cabin heater system.

You already know that the problem is thereabouts so I see no alternative to checking the security of the feed and return hoses, hose clips, O rings and heater matrix.
